JUAREZ WEATHER SUMMERLIKE Pleasant Conditions Serve to Augment Patronage Angelus and Jack Atkjn in Thrilling Struggle El Paso Tex December 3 Siimmerlike weather served to augment the usual halfholiday crowd at Tcrrazas Park today Th chief attraction the Chapala Handicap resulted in the upsetting of a wellmeant coup on the veteran Jack Atkin which in his last two starts here lacked his usual speed He was heavllv supported being backed from 24 to 1 to 8 to 5 bv lK st time Angelus was also well backed the others receding in the betting at an alarming rate Off to a good start Jack Atkin rushed to the front ami set a hot pace going the first quarter in 23J the half in 47i and threequarters in 112 Angelus lions on with bulldog courage and when T Kice thinking he had the race won eased Jack Atkin slightly his rider forced him through on the rail and In a terrific drive just got up by the shortest of noses The finish between these grand thoroughbreds was of the most thrilling kind and caused the occupants of the grandstand to rise to their feet in excitement all calling vocifer ¬ ously for their favorite to come on and win winThe The fifth race was a secondary feature and brought together the fast sprinters Trance and John Griffin II It was hardly a contest however for the Wain ripht filly went to the front outran John Gritfln II all the way and cantered in a winner in the easiest fashion in the fastest time for the distance at the meeting The others were outclassed although showing considerable speed in the first part of the race The sixth race at one and a sixteenth miles out of the chute preyed another thriller the three leaders running like a team throughout the last eighth and leaving the issue in doubt until the numbers were hung up upJ J K Newman a prominent Texas breeder arrived today also O G Parkc with a good string J Ilandolph owner of Bob Lynch claimed Marian Casey out of the second race for G25 G25Jockey Jockey Rice was cautioned by the stewards against rough riding tactics his exhibition in the Chapala Handicap being responsible for the warning warningJames James Johnston formerly trainer for II G Bed well and at present training for Jecouie Bqgmau of MexicorCitv arrived for a visit that witT extend over the holidays holidaysJack Jack Brannon arrived from Pensacola with his stable stableThe The Jockey Club Juarez will make an especial feature of early twoyearold racing Beginnlug pn New Years Day a twoyearbid race at three fur ¬ longs for fillies will be given and tliufollowingday the same sort of a scramble fot colts of that age will be hung up Thereafter each days card will contain at least one twoyearold race raceThere There are many good yearlings here Perhaps Henry McDaniel has the biggest bunch but W T Anderson has a promising string Applegato Yanke have another likely bunch and nearly every stable at Juarez houses two or three yearling colts or fillies Starter Cassidys assistants Harry Mor rissey and James Osborne have set up a schooling barrier for the yearlings and the youngsters have an hour each morning to themselves themselvesJohn John Shannon has charge of the books in the field enclosure
