WINANS BUYS MORE AMERICAN HORSES Of the yearlings sold at auction in this country in 1909 the highest price 3000 was paid by John Dy ment for a dark brown colt by Adam Roman Gold1 a grandlooking youngster which was resold privately to John E Madden His appearance in racing last year was looked forward to by more than a few ex ¬ pectant i eople but to no purpose for he was never sent to the jx st Besides this colt Madden had an otlier that was reported to have been highly tried and which also Was not raced This colt was named The Spy and is a bay son of Disguise Stempcr Par uttis In the way of receiving home news from abroad the following by Vigilant in London Sportsman of a recent date will serve to show that Madden saved these young horses for a good cus ¬ tomer aud probably sold them for a high price priceIt It is good news to hear that L L Winans the owner of Sir Martin and his yearling brother Sir Colin has been adding to his select stud and that but recently four fresh arrivals all bred In America have been installed at Lordship House Newmarket to be trained by Joseph Cannon These are made up of The Spy 2 a brown colt by Disguise Semper Paratus Goldbeater 2 a bay colt by Adam Roman Gold and a couple of yearling1 colts the one a chestnut by Prince of Melbourne Dainty and the other a bay by Hamburg Sans Peur Of the two first named The Spy has not yet run but is nomi ¬ nated by J K Madden for the Two Thousand Guin ¬ eas the Derby and Princess of Wales Stakes at Newmarket First July meeting next year and both he and Goldbeater have been entered for the Grand Prize of Paris Mr Winans Is a plucky purchaser and a fine allround sportsman of the best type I shall always think he was desperately unlucky not to have won the Derby with Sir Martin and can only hope that he will discover one as good as the big son of Ogden and Lady Sterling among his young horses
