NQ.W FOR THE CLARK HANDICAP. Splendid Field in Sight for Next Important Race at Churchill Downs. Louisville, Ky.. May 15. — Second only in interest io the Kentucky Derby, which was decided Saturday. is the historic Clark Handicap, which has as extended a history as the Derby. This event will I*- decided next Saturday, Hay 20. Ip to 1303 it was. like the Derby, strictly a race for three year olds. Then a handicap was substituted for the stakes mid it was made u race for three year olds and over, as i: is today. It was a two-mile race from ils first running in 1873 up to and including 1880. Then it was changed to a mile and a quarter and was so run until 1800, when it was reduced to a mile ami an eighth. It became a mile and a sixteenth race ia 1902 and has since continued so. VolUgUer. a son of Vandal, won the first Clark Stakes, beating II. I. MeGratbs famous colt, Calvin. In 1870 Capt. .1. T. Williams won it with Creedmoor, and the Derby winner of that year. Vagrant, finished second. In 1877 MeWhirter won the lie. defeating the unfed Vera Cruz. MeWhirter that day ran the two miles in 3:301, Which standi as a record for flic race at two miles. In lsjs I.eveler won it. Day Star, the Derby winner of that season, and Solicitor ran a dead heat for the place. In IsT.l Palsetto was the victor. In 1880 Kiukcad was tin winner.
