THE ONE THOUSAND GUINEAS STARTERS. "Sixteen fdliis turned out for the One Thousand Guineas, and of these one of the least fancied was Radiancy, which, however, came within a lew inches of completing a great double for J. B. Joel, for ii was oiilv in the last two strides that Atniali reached her to win by a short head. The fact is that the ■hnpely daughter had been slopped in bar work owing to baring stunrhled on to her kmes ami chipped them same time since, and naturally she was considered in no sort of condition to do beraelf Justice. She is. however, another feather in the cap of Buadridge, as is Atmah in that of the veteran Galeaaaa, a cast-off from Leopold de Kothschild*s stud that was a brilliant rnce horse, especially as a two-year old. He has for some years past been serving in Italy, lor which purpose he was, I fancy, purchased by Count Scheibter, and it stands to his credit that four of the biM iio for the Italian Derby claimed hint Cor sire last season. Atmah is an extremely good-looking aid bktodlike litis, and Fred Pratt had her in perfect condition. It was originally Intended that she should run for the Two Thousand Guineas, but wiser counsels prevailed, anil the less ambitious policy bore good fruit, as witness the result of yea onlays race, and a severe race on Wednesday would probably have taken some of the steel out of her. Fox may he complimented on having ridden a very line finish, but whatever may be said in his praise redounds also to the praise of J. H. Martin, who came within an ace of bringing off a huge surprise. "Lord Derby ran two jn Hair Trigger II. and Persephone, but the former was decreed the superior by a wide margin and was very warm. At one time tiie daughter of Fowling Piece ainl Altcar was backed against the field, hut owing to hints which told of her not being quite as demure in deportment SS COUld be desired she met with some opposition at the eleventh hour. She looked beautiful and in the preliminary canter went like a bird, though she did but little in the actual race and cannot have given her true running, as there was little to Choose between her and Persephone at the finish. The bay Ally by Isinglass, out of Sceptre, did duty for Sir William Bass, and I regret to hear that she will go up for sale at the Second Spring meeting, when all Sir Williams horses in training will he offered without reserve, included among them being Atropia. Bosedrop winner of the Oaks, Maid of Corinth. Mary Carmlchael and a batch of untried two-year ■Ids! Mm h admired were the Palace House two. Sandwich and I.indoiya. of whom Mailer elected to ride the latter, while i.ynham was on the back of the American lily. Lord Falmouth relied on two nice fillies in Mary the Second and Iuvicta. both Of which carried the Kingsclere polish, and a nice mare well trained was Knockfeerna. though she is disfigured sniewhat by a lump on her knee. There was bat littb delay at the post before the signal was given. and Ilia with Knockfeerna in close company, made the running from Radiancy, Soapel. Atmah and Hair Trigger II. At the Bushes Captain Foresii r*s lilh i;is done with, and Radiancy drew out in advance of Knockfeerna and Sospol. In the Dtp Atmah took second place and. running her race out very stoutly. .h:st got up iii time to scon- a bard-earned rictory for James de Rothschild, wbolse colors are a combination of the family blue and yellow, and hardly less popular than tliose of Mr. Leopold." — London Sportsman.
