STINGER BEATS HOUSEMAID HANDICAP AT LATONIA GOES TO HORSE THAT RACED POORLY AT LOUISVILLE. James McManus Scores Double with Star 0 Ryan and Presumption, Latter Being Only Favorite to Make Good. Cincinnati. 0., June 10. — By far the biggest crowd that has been seen at Latonia on any Monday iu many years witnessed the racing this afternoon. Compared to the crowd on Derby day todays gathering was, of course, small, but made up iu enthusiasm what was lacking in numbers. All the winners* were vociferously cheered and the fact that five pronounced favorites suffered defeat did not affect the majority of the spectators for they played around the tirst choices. The big operators, however, lost heavily. The card was an ordinary one and. while speculation was naturally light, it showed twenty-live per cent, iucrease over last seasons corresponding day of the meeting. One lone purse of the six was won by what one could term a locally owned horse. This was Camellia, which runs in the name of A. P. Humphrey. Jr., of Louisville. Incidentally in graduating from the maiden ranks this filly won as easily a any f the other successful ones. The main upset attended the running of the handicap, which brought together some useful sprinters. Including Housemaid. The latter in her first effort this season at Louisville showed what good judges considered the same form that characterized her successful two-year old racing, and naturally she was thought to hold her opposition safe today. She flattered her backers by disj osing of the speedy Golden Egg in the tirst quarter and appeared a certain winner until rounding into the stretch, where Stinger came with a rush to beat kef handily near the end. Stingers showing was iu marked contrast to his preceding effort at Churchill Downs. James McManus scored a double during the afternoon with Star ORyan and Presumption, and, according to reiwrt. made a sensational cleanup by their victories. Star ORyan. in wearing down Delaney. showed form that was much superior to his Louisville essays, while Presumption was much the best and won as his rider pleased. The closing dash was costly to the followers of the J. B. Besness stable, who were willing to accept a short price against Imprudent. Marian Casey defeated the filly by a small margin. Incision was another supposed good betting proposition that went wrong during the afternoon, Gold Cap beating baas with ease. • Following Governor Grays Latonia Derby victory Capt. J. T. Williams was served with a notice of attachment in a suit to recover ,489, with interest at 6 per cent, from 1908. brought by Caruthers Ewing or Memphis. Tennessee. John Hach meister. general manager of the Latonia track, was ■erred with notice to withhold payment of the Derby stakes until the case is settled. Captain Williams was also made defendant in a suit in the Kenton Quarterly Court by i. Bishop, who alleges that Williams is indebted to him for 00 on a promissory note. Captain Williams, in discussing the affair, said: "Caruthers Ewing claims the amount of the judgment for having defended me in a suit against Murray Keller a long while back. I paid Mr. ■wing .1ih» for bis services and I contend that is all that is due Man." Manager Hachmeister will hold ,000 to cover the judgment, interest and court costs in the ease and will turn the remainder of the Derby Stakes over to R. N. Smith and Go., in whose name and colors Governor Gray runs. Dr. M. M. Leach, paddock and patrol judge, was unable to officiate today on account of illness. Limousine, which started in the fifth race, crashed in to the fence opposite the grandstand while on her way to the post and gave jockey Walcott a nasty tumble. He remounted, however, showing no ill effects. Baccarra, which started in the third race, returned to the finish with a badly bruised shoulder, incurred during the running in some unexplained way. Jockey Steele was the first to suffer discipline at the hands of the starter and was suspended for five days for bad behavior at the post. American Girls injuries, sustained Saturday, consists of a severed tendon on the left hind leg. An effort will be made to save her for breeding purposes. William Gerst was among todays visitors, having come- from his home in Nashville to look over the horses he has racing here. According to W. J. Youug. who is training Waldo, that colt is again going soundly and will be raced shortly. C. D. Chenanlt brought Milton B. and others from Lexington. Sarah Ohenault. which fell on the closing day at Lexington, was among the starters in the first race today. According to well-informed easterners here the Gittins bills will come before the senate tonight. Most of the eastern horsemen here are optimistic that the bills will pass and are planning a return to Saratoga immediately after the close of racing at Latonia. John Hogan. formerly assistant to Jake Holtman. was among todays visitors and tried to interest hois-men in shipping to Chicago for the two davs meeting to be held at Hawthorne Park under the auspices of a Letter Carriers Association. He announced that the purses would range from 00 to 00, the latter sum being for handicaps. There will be seven races daily. Mr. Hogan will return to Chicago tonight and will return later. He secured a list of seventy-five horses for shipment. The throw-out list numbsrs thirty-six for the three days. Those horses will take precedence at the next time of entry. Most of them are two year-olds. L. Blum, the Mexican horse dealer, was among todays arrivals and will try to purchase a number of horses to send to Mexico. Jockey Estep. who has been riding on the Canadian circuit, has arrived here. He is under contract to George Sherman and will ride at Latonia daring the remainder of the meeting.
