SPLENDID FIELD FOR HAMILTON DERBY. Wonderfully Good Lot of Three-Year-Olds Named to Start at Hamilton Opening This Afternoon. Hamilton. Out.. June 10. -With a program of eight well-filled races, the feature of which is a Derby contest, the Hamilton Jockey Club will open Its Summer meeting tomerew under conditions that augur v/t 11 for lis silicons. The Derby brings out the best tit ill of three-year-olds that ever went to the post for this race, included in the ten that are carded are the Kentucky Derby winner. Meridian. tie Latonia Derby winner. Governor Cray, and also Naushon, Novelty. Zeus. The Nigger and Whist, all of which are of high class. Never before in Canada and seldom in the I sited Stales has an association been able to bring together a field of this sort and a stirring contest should result. The Kentuckians arc exceedingly sweet on Gorernor Ciays chances, while most of the horsemen from itbec sections rate the Wilson crack. Naushon, as best, If the track remains in its present fast condition, it would not In- surprising to rind a new Canadian record established for the distance. Preparations have been made by the club to handle an Inlaw n.-e throng. excursion trains will be run from surrounding cities and towns and over 1,000 visitors are exeptcted from Buffalo and Niagara Falls. The Toronto delegation will be brought over by two special trains. A aw pi lan awaits race-goers and those who were I ere in former seasons will hardly recognise the place. The plant has been practically remodeled. A large overhang extending ait some thirty feet BBS hi D added to tlie grandstand roof. Additions have been built on the back of it. Cement walks have been laid all over the grounds and new stabies have been constructed. A handsome new steel betting shed has been built and Ibis part of the enclosure has been raised about seven feet which will afford a splendid view of the racing. The turf course has been given special attention and awnings have ben placed over the benches on the clubhouse lawns for protection from the suns rays. The whole plant has been given a new dress of paint and the club has gone to an expense of some .0,000 in bringing the course up to date. The club has decided to have the races start at 2:45 p. m. They would be started earlier but for the fuel that the Toronto trains do not arrive until that time. The betting ring, which will be an open one. will lie in charge of Arthur Blrod, ami some thirty layers are expected to cut in. The club has formulated some good rules winch win he strictly enforced. All cashiers will be required to bring out their sheets the next day and the drawings for positions in the ring will be niaue by a committee of bookmakers. Clerks and race followers have been warned to refrain from discussing the racing in a bofaUeresaj manner about hotel lobbies and in other public places and from examining sheets in cars on their return from the track. No person will be permitted to work without coats and all running and jostling about the ring will be stopped. All of the big Stables are here and liberal entries have been made for all of tomorrows races. In all ninety-one horses are carded. The club will feature racing over its grass course this season. This is the only turf course in Canada and there is always a surplus number of entries for these races. Jockeys A. Bag Ion and B. Steele arrived from Latonia this morning and T. Rice is expected this evening.
