The stakes had a gross value of . KH. of which the winners net portion was .44o. There were only five starters, with Prince Gal enjoying favoritism. The winners good time of 1 :.Sji added to the merit of his performance. While the Merchants Stakes was adjudged the feature the second and fifth races also held interest and promised considerable in the way of good sport. k counting for another large attendance. In the second race T. . McDowells crack colt. The Man V ager, was making his; local debut and was asked to meet some formidable opposition at weight differ- I l nces much in their favor. He accomplished his task successfully, but some regarded lie fact that he received a big advantage at the start as detracting from his victory. He was away fully in his stride, possibly two lengths in front, and Keener kept him at his task throughout, eventually winding up two lengths before Wheelwright, while Pre- Mimption was the same distance further back. Wheelwright made a strenuous effort to overhaul the leader, but at no time could he decrease the winners bad. Setback, the favorite of the race, was the victim of one of J. Glass blundering effort! and also a |m oi- start, both combining to destroy his winning chances. Jockey T. Wee was suspended for five davs by the starter for disobedience at the post in the iirst race. K. C. Trance showed soreness after a work-out this morning. Dr. Waldo Brigga is going soundly and probably will be a starter at this meeting. Todays speculation was again voluminous and probably totaled the greatest mid week amount since the present system of betting was installed.
