WINDSORS BEST MEETING SESSION OF SPORT JUST ENDED MOST SUCCESSFUL IN HISTORY OF COURSE. Attendance Greater than at Any Previous Meeting, Notwithstanding Increased Admission Fee Gossip from Canadian Circuit, Detroit. Mich.. July 21. The first of the 1011 meetings of the Windsor Fair Grounds and Driving Park Association, which came to a close Saturday, will go on record as the most successful meeting so far given at the Windsor track. Because of the absence of eastern competition Windsor was the mecca for horsemen and followers of racing from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi and the result was a meeting of unprecedented prosperity. The eastern contingent that had been patronizing the Canadian circuit tracks all season in the absence of racing in New York state was supplemented at Windsor by numerous arrivals from Kentucky, where the usual midsummer suspension of racing is on. The attendance at Wind-w averaged much greater than at any previous meeting there, and this in spite of an increase in the admission fee to ..50. Besides, a greater number of books were in daily operation. The same prosperity seems in store for the Fort Erie Second meeting, which is scheduled to Open on Saturday next for the regulation seven days of racing, with the ,000 Dominion Handicap scheduled as the stellar feature. Virtually everybody who participated in the racing hero will go to Fort Erie. John Powers will again have charge of his old favorite. Jack Atkin. this week. The horse will be turned over to him at Fort Erie. Barney Schrciber wrote Mr. Powers that Jack Atkin had been given his daily gallops right along and was in condition to be given fast work. An effort will be made to have the horse ready for fall racing in Canada. Trainer Powers had great success with this son of Sain. He succeeded in getting him to stay a mile and a quarter last season, when lie won the 0,000 Dominion Handicap at Fort Erie in record time for the distance in Canada. Mr. Powers will also take over the four-year-old Sager. S. C. Ilihlreth has not had much success with his junipers this season. He paid good prices for Dinna Ken and The Welkin, and one purse is all he has taken. -with them. This was won by The Welkin at Windsor. The stiff fences at Toronto and Montreal were evidently not to Dinna Kens liking, for he soured and jumped in slovenly fashion. Fitz Herbert, which recently pulled up lame in a race, is going along again. He stepped on a stone which bruised his foot and the injury was not as serious as was at iirst supposed. King James has not been to the races in a couple of months. Ho went wrong at Montreal. Novelty has not started in a few weeks, and out of the big band of two-year-olds with which he started the season few have shown winning form. The program book for the second meeting at Fort Eric has been issued. Four stakes will be run during l the meeting the ,000 Dominion Handicap on the ! opening day. Saturday, July 29; the Iroquois Hotel Stakes on Tuesday, August 1; the Grand Canadian I Steeplechase on Thursday. August 3. and the Cana-! dian Sportsman Handicap on Saturday. August 5. There are many cliglbles to all but the Grand Csna- dian Steeplechase. All of the best horses in the country are eligible to go to the post iu the Dominion Handicap. The program book for the second meeting of the Hamilton .lockey Club. August 12 to 10. lias made its appearance. It provides for seven races on each day of the meeting, with 00 as the minimum purse and : liberal spriukllng of races of greater value, designed to attract the better class of horses in training on the Canadian circuit. There will lie the usual number of races through and over the turf course.
