BOYS IN BLUE AS HKSTS ARMY AND NAVY DAY OBSERVED AT THE CHARLESTON TRACK, Catcsby Woodfords Garden of Allah Wins tha Debutante Stakes, with Her Stablemate, Jessie Porter, Second and Spirella Third. Charleston. S. C. February 17. — Incle Sams boy* in blue invaded Palmetto lark this afternoon, not with hostile intent, but as guests of the association. the occasion being Army ami Navy day. Great niim hers of soldiers from historic Fort Moultrie, anil marines and sailors from the- Charleston navy yard took advantage of tho associations iuvitat ion to witness the sport. Col. H. p. Ludlow, commandant at Fort Moultrie, and a aaaaVtC of his aides were among those present. Weather comlit ions were Ideal and contributed in bringing out one of the largest crowds of the meeting. Track eonditions were again bad. rain which fedl this morning having precluded any possibility of improvement. Several spills again resulted from the poor going, but luckily the results were incoiisc epiential. The betting ring was jammed throughout the afternoon, with speculation keen. The layers reported the1 best business of the meeting. The -in -cess of numerous favorites caused the bookmakers to sustain a tremendous loss. Seven rae-es. with tho Debutante stakes for two-year-old fillies, over a distance, of :!!._, furlongs, having a guaranteed value of ,090 as the feature, fat nished fairly interesting sport. Tho stake race went to Catesby Woodfords Garden of Allah, with he-stable companion. Jessie Porter, in second place, and Spirella third. The winner, a trim looking Illy by Star Shoot— Era noes Hindoo, slnnveel a ste-rling performance and won in commanding fashion. She closely followed the tleet Spirella during the first quarter, but when fully settled in her stride iti tin-stretch, she drew out to win as her rieler pleased. Jessie Porter, after a rough early trip, came with a rush that enabled her to overhaul Spired la near th" end. The handicap at one mile and a sixteenth enabled Font to score his third successive victory this week He spread eaglcd Lawtou Wiggins asel Lochiol and won cantering. II. G. Bedwells Berkeley was easily best of those that made the contest in the lift It race and had plenty- of margin over Bye Straw at the eml. Morn-Lad might have been second iu the race, but for falling not far from the finish. J. w. Hedrick added another to the string of horses he has claimed at Palmetto Park when he look Royal Captive after she was beaten in tho fifth race. Royal Captive cost Mr. Hedrick ,310. Several new bookmakers were in line this afternoon, including William Beverly and Frank Tyler. Both of these gentbiiio-.i are located at Siiinmerville and the racing colony that is wintering at this well known resort is growing larger every day. M. Kittieman arrived from Detroit this morning. His brother. Frank Kittieman. will be here from New York in a few days. Jockey •. Carroll, who had the mount on R. F. Carmans Merry Lael. Buffered the loss ,if two teeth as a result of his fall when Merry Lad wont down ill the homestretch in the fifth race. L. II. Adair purchased Iluskey Lad at private sale from I". II. Mihlen this morning and the colt ran in his interest in the fourth race. The. three year old Prince Chap, owned by P. IL Jones, is down with an attae-k of pneumonia.
