GOOD DAY FOE LAYEES AT NOEFOLK All tho Public Choices Bowled Over Firestone Wins for First Time Over the Jumps Norfolk Va April 11 This was a day for the layers at the Jamestown Jockey Clubs course The afternoons results showed six beaten favorites Some of the winners came from the most unexpected quarters and ran practically unbacked The horses that came here from Charleston are unaccustomed to the walkup system of starting which has been adopted by Mars Cassidy and while the fields in a majority of the races were bunched when the Hag I was dropped they were pretty well strung Oyt be ¬ fore sixteenthTrudo going a sixteenth Trudo spoiled a wellplanned coup when he bolted out of the course after taking the last Jump in the hurdle race He had a sixlengths lead at the time but in going to the gap he went inside of the flags and jockey Allen was forced to pull him up Firestone which was second at the time then came ou and won In a canter Trudo was good enough to beat the others after being pulled up and being taken back to the point where he ran out This raco marked Firestones first victory over jumps Ho fenced none too well being slow to recover at the ImproveWillie various fences but he probably will Improve Willie Martin and J Forrester each furnished two winners The latters victories came with the running of the third and fifth races Blanche Frances at odds of CO to 1 winning the former andFan chette at 8 to 1 the latter The Rump and Rye Straw carried the Martin colors to victory The finish in the Blanche Frances race was exceedingly close and it was only in the final stride that the winner poked her nose in front of Frank Ruhstaller The latter was favorite and many of his backers thought that he had lasted long enough Conse ¬ quently there was some dissatisfaction over the placing placingJockeys Jockeys Obcrt and Whatley each piloted two win ¬ ners The latter who had the mount on Fanchette was held responsible for a jam on the turn into the backstretch and was suspended for one week for rough riding In the mixup which occurred ot this point Royal Onyx was thrown against the fence and badly cut cutDave Dave Woodford who trained for the Beverwyck Stable last season arrived from Charleston this morning and again assumed charge oF those horses succeeding Charles Mulholland MulhollandWilliam William Garth came over from Baltimore this morning to look over the string that his son Lewis Is training here He reports the Pimlico track as being in good condition and that his horses there are doing finely The elder Garth returned to Bal ¬ timore tonight Pennyroyal tonightPennyroyal one of the horses that H G Bed well shipped here froin Charleston was taken sick en yesterdayMart route and died yesterday Mart Demarest was an arrival from El Paso He was down with an attack of pneumonia at the conclusion of the Juarez meeting and some fear was entertained at the time for his recovery He looks to bo in good condition again however and is ready campaignTom for the summer campaign Tom Shcedy who is interested with A G Blakc ley in the ownership of some of the horses that the latter is racing arrived from New York YorkThe The jumper Aunt Jule fell at the fourth jump in todays hurdle race and broke her leg at the pastern joint Tom Rodrock who is training the marc far J Tennant has hopes of saving her for breeding purposes purposesCad Cad Irish and Col C Edgar White were among the new arrivals The former came from New York and the latter from Charleston CharlestonAgnlcr Agnlcr Half mile In 54 54Among Among the trials this morning were wereBurgeois Burgeois Half mile in 50 50Busy Busy Mile in 149 149Cowl Cowl Threequarters in 117 117Handrnnning Handrnnning Half mile in 52 52Joe Joe Madden Threequarters in 119 119Lady Lady Irma Fiveeighths in 105 105Lady Lady Sybil Threeeighths in 30 30Latent Latent Fiveeighths in 107 107Louise Louise Welles Threequarters in 118 118Malitine Malitine Threequarters in 120 120McLcod McLcod F Threequarters in 120 120Miss Miss Stanncl Half mile in 50 50Perthshire Perthshire Half mile in 2 ° 35 48 48Plate Plate Glass Half mile in 50 50Sandhill Sandhill Threequarters in 120 120Sherwood Sherwood Threequarters In 119 119Spellbound Spellbound Threequarters In 117 117Summer Summer Night Mile in 152 Toniata Threequarters in 118 118Woodcraft Woodcraft Mile in 144
