CHARLESTON MEETING ENDS GENERAL MANAGER FONS DECLARES THAT MEETING WAS ENTIRELY SUCCESSFUL Management Gratified with Results Achieved and andAnticipate Anticipate Greater Success in Future Seasons Business Men Say Sport Benefited City Charleston S C April 10 The Palmetto Park meeting terminated today with a surprisingly large attendance oil hand to witness the windup In point of numbers the gathering by far exceeded that of Derby day and came near to approaching the high mark for the season Most of the leading business men politicians and city officials were on hand and helped in making the occasion a memorable one There were no outstanding incidents connected with the racing except that several intended good things reserved for final coups were bowled over Activity in the ring was again marked with the layers having much the best of the speculative argu ¬ ment mentCommenting Commenting on the meeting General Manager Pons said Our meeting just closed came up to our expectations in many respects and we are grati ¬ fied with tho results We were badly handicapped at the outset by the severe weather that prevailed which caused a postponement of the opening and forced many of the racing folk to return to more congenial climes Later we were confronted with the possibility of adverse legislation and this also caused many to keep away for a time During the middle portion of our meeting we overcame a big deficit and even the concluding period was profitable I feel gratified over the many expressions of good will from the business interests who are united in the opinion that racing has been a wonderful stimulus for Charleston this winter and helped its people in many ways I am greatly encouraged be ¬ cause of tho many good wishes by some of the best people that future meetings will show vast im ¬ provement and it will always be the managements earnest effort to furnish racing of the highest char ¬ acter acterJohn John Furlong again demonstrated his quality this time in decisive fashion by carrying 110 pounds aad simply toying with his opposition in the mile and one sixteenth handicap which featured the card Ho was an overwhelming favorite hinlgavci his backers not the slightest concern after goingjLUJttiequarters James Dockery might have given hiinan argument as he was looming up menacingly when taken with a hemorrhage that forced his retirement from the contest The frequently disappointing Tack Parker contrib ¬ uted to a double for the Tennessee Stable by winning the fifth race in fiuky fashion after he appeared to be hopelessly beaten He was helped by the fact that the leaders swung wide on the stretch turn enabling him to slip through next to the inner rail and get up in time to beat Tom Massie MassieJ J C Milani uncovered an intended good thing in the opener in Frederick L but lie failed because of lack of racing education Work watchers had him marked as having figured in some sensational preliminaries but Loan Shark led him for the en ¬ tire distance The race was marred by a mishap to McTaggart on Fort Sumter who was crowded to a fall by the rough riding tactics of other jockeys jockeysAnother Another coup that failed during the afternoon was that attempted with Irish Kid in the second nice He showed nothing to warrant even the suspicion that he could have won under any conditions conditionsThe The Norfolk delegation departed tonight by special train and consisted of a large number Those in ¬ tending to rest at Baltimore will leave tomorrow and the first representation of those who will engage in Kentucky racing will also depart from here tomornw morning They will leave by special and regular trains The Louisville contingent will go next Monday MondayE E C Smith who served as the Jockey Club stew ¬ ard left tonight for Norfolk where he will remain several days before going to Pimlico to assume his duties there thereTom Tom Shaw reconsidered his determination to go to Norfolk and departed tonight for New York where he will remain until the opening of the Pimlico meeting Frank Baiu who booked to a heavy losing here will leave tomorrow for Chicago where iie will remain several days before going to Pimlico PimlicoFrank Frank Bruen who acted as auditor here will leave next Monday to rejoin John Hachmeister in Cin ¬ cinnati and will assume his duties at the Latonia track
