WILL BE RICHEST RACE OF YEAR Kentucky Endurance Stakes to Be Decided at Louisville in Pall Will Be Great Feature Louisville Ky April 29 The New Louisville Jockey Club has secured the Kentucky Endurance Stakes by voluntarily offering to add to it the hand ¬ some sum of 7500 and the richest prize of the American turf will be contested for at Churchill Downs next fall Louisville made the only offer for the great fourmile event run under the auspices of the Kentucky State Racing Commission and its proposal was generous in view of the fact that it is 4500 more than was given last year aud 1500 greater than the 0000 which the commission this year stipulated should be given givenThe The offer was accepted with alacrity by the Ken ¬ tucky State Racing Commission at its meeting at Louisville Saturday To the 7500 given by the Louisville Jockey Club and the 1000 cup contri ¬ buted by Hie commission will be added all the fees received from entries and starters to the race which should bring the aggregate value of the stake to a total of about 12XM So maguiflceut a prize is bound to attract widespread attention not only from turfmen but the public at large and doubt ¬ less many wealthy and enterprising lovers of the sport will acquire and train horses especially to run in this great race Manager Winn expects a crowd that will rival or excel all previous gatherings at Churchill Downs to witness the race With the Endurance Stakes on its fall program and the Ken ¬ tucky Derby in the spring the New Louisville Jockey Club will take an advanced position in the furtherance of highclass turf sport sportThe The letter in which the New Louisville Jockey Club made its generous bid for the Endurance Stakes pays a high compliment to the Kentucky State Racing Commission for its work in main ¬ taining and elevating the turf in Kentucky The letter is as follows followsApril April 20 1912 Col E F Clay Chairman and MemlHjrs Kentucky State Racing Commission Gentlemen The New LouisvUle Jockey Club hereby proposes to add the siim of 7500 to the Endurance Stakes to be run during our meeting at Churchill Downs this fall This offer Is in response to the resolution of your honorable body under the terms of which you offered a cup of the value of 1000 iu addition to the amount donated by the association over whose track the race is to be coutested coutestedThis This commonwealth stands at the head of the list in the matter of breeding and racing as it properly should While In other states the sport has waned or been abandoned altogether it has steadily advanced in Kentucky This in a large ineasareMsTluettjtheWise supervision of the Racing Commission which has unceasingly striven to ele ¬ vate the sport and place it upon such a footing as would appeal to all good citizens citizensThe The establishment of the Endurance Stakes was one of the most important steps taken In this direc ¬ tion The importance of breeding horses capable of going long distances is emphasized by the great Interest the Federal Government is now taking in the matter matterA A realization of these facts induces us to offer the sum above named as by doing so we feel that we are adding a stimulus to the movement doing our share toward supplementing the efforts of you gentlemen and insuring the fact that the race will be the greatest one to bo run in America during the year Respectfully yours NEW yoursNEW LOUISVILLE JOCKEY CLUB CLUBM M J Winn vicepresident and manager
