CANADIAN HORSES ARE BACKWARD Unfavorable Training Conditions to Blame Some Interesting Gossip from Woodbine Toronto Ont April 29 The coincidence this year of the severest of winters a retarded spring and the earliest possible appointment for the open ¬ ing of the racing season have produced the unusual situation that with the Kings Plate only thr f weeks away none of the horses trained here have been half a mile in 50 seconds over the track on which they are to run a mile and a quarter for the richest purse of the whole Canadian season writes Francis Nelson in the Globe The Brookdale Firm horses are said to have reached that stage of condi ¬ tion before they left Barrie where their sandy track is fit to gallop on as soou as the snow leaves Two of them have put in a bit of work at Woodbine justifying that report Heresy aud Tropaeblium were the pair and Mr Simon Dymont was on hand to see the gallop They went five furlongs in 104 the first half mile iu 50 and pulled up six fur ¬ longs in 120 The big Nasturtium colt has a lot of speed but it looks as if the son of Sain and Hera will be the better at the long distance Trainer Nixon sent his other pair of platers Marcovil and Sealed Order three furlongs at a smart pace A paceA few days of warm weather will do all that is necessary to put the Woodbine track at its best but just now it shows some wet spots Warm weather too will enable trainers to do more with their horses in a couple of days than a week of low tem ¬ perature So far as the platers arc concerned they are on an equality in the matter of opportunity to get ready except that those which had plenty of strong work last fall can be more easily dealt with now nowThe The biggest Canadian stable and the one with the most numerous Plate entry Mr J E Seagrams lot including five Kings Plate horses Is still at home but will be moved to Woodbine in a few days At present they are doing as well as possible over the livefurlongs track at the Waterloo Farm where trainer Littlelield has nineteen head preparing for business Mr Seagram will have a strong as well as numerous band to battle for the Kings Guineas His platers are Havrock Rustling Head Sea Purple China and Longus all but the lastnamed with some racing experience Havrock has even been In the Plate and finished fourth to his stable companion Jane Shore in the race won by St Bass last year He was In front of her much of the way but she outlasted him and finished third just where she was the year before This year she is again an entry but will carry the black and blue of Mr T Ambrose Woods who won one Plate with a castoff of the VnlKT Farm Havrock was second three times last year arid unplaced in two other starts Head Sea a fine colt by Havrock Fairlie Head is another good prospect but the one which showedthe most last season was the filly Rustling though she was but once at the post That was at the Wood ¬ bine fall meeting and the company she met In eluded such good youngsters as Buckhoru Froglegs Flying Yankee and Acton The Provincebred had more early speed than anything else in the race though she was beaten by the seasoned horses in the run through the stretch What she did in this com ¬ pany was sufficient to stamp her as out of the ordi ¬ nary and if she makes the natural improvement i due to the lapse of time she will be hard to beat among her own kind She is bred to go as far as wanted being by the imported horse Marta Santa a son of the Doncaster stallion Martley On her dams side too her credentials are of the highest order Frou Frou bought because of her rich breed ¬ ing when In foal with Rustling is a Meddler mare and her dam was Longfellows famous daughter Hypocrite HypocritePurple Purple China is a Ypsilanti filly and her sire now one of the Waterloo stallions was a champion in England her dam being also imported She started twice last year but was not placed Longus has not been seen under colors The full list of the Seagram lot in training is mated with half a dozen mares before being put into training this season seasonJockey Jockey Musgravc has been at the farm for several weeks doing riding exercise and will be able to do as low a weight as last year yearThe The bestbacked horse in the Kings Plate and practically the only one supported to any extent Charlie Crews Amberite is now at Woodbine hav ¬ ing come iu from the Halfway House in company with Ta Nun Da and Kilo All three are in the pink of condition and trainer Stanley Mumford has evi ¬ dently done well by them Amberite is perfectly sound and has had no troubles all winter except i bruised foot that laid her up for a couple of days She has filled out and improved in everv wiv and her appearance amply justifies the confidence felt in her chances of success Owner Crew took a cood sporting chance when he bought for 1050 what was presumably the best of the Valley Farm lings in 1910 and if his pluck is rewarded vnir by win nlng tho richest purse in Canada there will be nono Continued on second page CANADIAN HOUSES ABE BACKWARD Continued from first page to begrudge It His remarkable success with old Caper Sauce has made many race followers look on him as a lucky man and It must be said that he has done well with a small establishment His latest transaction was to buy the dam of Caper Sauce at Mr Seagrams annual sale That gentleman parted with New Dance because she had produced only fillies since Caper Sauce was foaled At the Halfway House Mr Crew now has a fine colt foal from her by Inferno Cannie Maid has a filly by Martimas The Crew horses in
