JIM BASEY TAKES THE HANDICAP HANDICAPBeats Beats Enfield and Other Good Sprinters in Feature Race at Alan I Spokane Wash May 1 Showers fell this morn ¬ ing but when the horses went to the post at Alan for the Pend dOreille Handicap the fonrth race the track was fast Jim Basey the winner broke nip Idly away from the post and oiiened a long lead hut had all he could do at the finish to stall oft the gallant bid made by the favorite Enfield which broke slowly and was far out of the running in the early stages He moved up gamely but was In ¬ clined to l ear out in the hist furlong Flying Foot ¬ steps which received strong support looked danger ¬ ous at the paddock gate hut weakened in the final hundred yards F J Grefers Sidon winner of the second race was well supported by his stable connections and had little trouble in disusing of his opposition oppositionJockeys Jockeys Forsythe and J Hanover who came west with the stable of II G Bedwell will soon be in action here herePinkola Pinkola a stake winner in the east died here this morning from congestion of the kidneys He be ¬ longed to Ed Alvey and was brought west by J C Ferriss FerrissJockey Jockey C Boss was Cued 25 by the judges for rough riding in the sixth race raceSecretary Secretary Frank Smith of the Coenr dAlene Fair and Kacing Association estimated the opening day attendance at 45uO That looks like prosperity for the turf in the northwest
