DERBY DAY CROWD WILL BE BIG Reservations for Accommodations at Louisville Hotels Reflect Interest in Churchill Downs Racing Louisville Ky May 1 The reservations already made with the various hotels in this city indicate that the largest crowd that ever visited Louisville during a nice meeting will IMJ on hand when the Derby is decided at Churchill Downs on Saturday May 11 These reservations are by no means all coming from horsemen They represent prominent citizens from many of the greatest cities of the country St Louis has spoken for quarters for a large delegation and so has Chicago while a month ago some of the choicest apartments were reserved at the leading houses for race loving millionaires from New York YorkInterest Interest is intense in the great event of the open ¬ ing day the Kentucky Derby to be run at the Downs Even if The Manager should fail to go to the post the appearance of Worth and Sonada under colors that day will alone be suflicient of an attraction Pitted against these two cracks will be other good threeyearolds With a fast track it Js likely to be a record Derby nice as it is no secret that the Hallcnheck stable people believe that if Worth is beaten Meridians time of 205 for the mile and a quarter will be reduced reducedSecond Second in interest only to the Kentucky Derby will be the meeting in the Bashford Manor Stakes of the unbeaten Hawthorn and Forward the star of the Charleston winter meeting The admirers of the latter are strong in the belief that he will out ¬ run the son of Hastings as they claim he is as fast a twoyearold in getting away from the bar ¬ rier as was ever saddled Those who stand by the marvelous record of Hawthorn think no twoyearold in training can beat him and they say that if For ¬ ward outbreaks him from the harrier Hawthorn will get him at the finish and beat him like all other horses he has met Fred Luzadcr and there is no better judge of a good horse than the Wainwright trainer says Hawthorn is simply another Colin and that it is foolish to race a colt like Forward after him at all It is universally known that many good twoyearolds have been virtually ruined by trying to beat a horse far superior to them in class It is maintained in some quarters that the western turf public have not seen a colt of the age of Haw ¬ thorn whicli compared to him since El Rio Bey that unbeaten wonder of California CaliforniaBut But the Derby and the meeting here of the great twoyearolds will not be the whole attraction at the Downs this spring The Clark Handicap will bring together the Kentucky Derby winner of 1 11 Meridian J W Schorrs Star Charter Ocean Bound Cherryola Granite Fashion Plate T M Green horsesThe High Private and other good horses The two other great attractions of the meeting will be the historical Kentucky Oaks with a history as long as that of the Derby and the ever popular Gentlemens Cup race which will bring to gcther Louisvilles best representation of amateur riders some of whom are canahle horsemen horsemenThe The two local tracks were much improved today but only two Derby candidates worked to any extent they being George J Longs Nicias anil Free Lance The former cantered three furlongs in 42 while Free Lance went a mile in 14 covering the first quarter in 25 the half in 52 five furlongs in 105 threequarters iu 118 and seven furlongs in 133 He cantered out the mile and an eighth in 205 While the time was not essentially fast It was regarded as extra good work as the colt ran all the way in the middle of the track and made much wider turns than is usual in such trials Free Lance is an improved colt and local trainers think that as far as he goes he will be a keen contender in the Derby this year Many yearMany horses worked today at the Downs The best
