TRAINING GALLOPS AT LOUISVILLE Derby Candidates Get Respite from Fast Work Miller Henderson a Sick Man Louisville Ky May 3 Kentucky Derby candi ¬ dates took a rest today from fast work at the Downs Nicias was the only one to go faster than a twomin ute clip This colt which is George J Longs second bow for the big race only went a half mile in 34 cantering the first quarter in 27 Two candidates for Kentucky Oaks honors however worked well They were Flainma and Antoline The former a daughter of Hastings went a mile and a quarter in 213 pulling up The fractlonals were 13 25 40 53 107 120 134 147 204 The rumor spread that lnr trainer now lias an idea of starting her in the Kentucky Derby but the stable folks stated she was being prepared solely for the Oaks Autoline made friends by the speed she showed for five furlongs The Mattingly filly worked this distance in 102 running the quarter in 23 threeeighths in 35 and the half in 49 49The The fastest work over a considerable distance he was nnablc to look after his stable at present and Peter Whnmer will take charge of the Henderson Hogan horses In Ken ¬ tucky until trainer Henderson is able to resume his duties at the track Frank G Hogan who arrived here from California last night went to Lexington this morning and will transfer the horses of the linn at that place to Mr Wlmmer WlmmerJack Jack Campbell was at the Downs today distribu ¬ ting stake blanks for the Niagara Racing Associa ¬ tions summer meetings at Fort Erie ErieJames James Gritlin received word from J S McCul lough the Illinois breeder that the mares Proph ¬ etess Larida and Felicity Murat have remarkably fine foals this season The one out of Prophetess and the Felicity Murat foals are colts while Czars dam has a filly Idle Fancy the dam of Fairy Story also has a filly this season by Hurst Park the sire of all these youngsters Mr Griflin showed at the Downs today a good filly out of this latter marc in Idle Tale It was the first time she was ever asked to speed and though scarcely knowing how to run as yet she went three furlongs in 3C She is by Superman a Brooklyn Handicap winner that is a son of Commando CommandoSome Some wellinformed horsemen think well of the twoyearold Judge Wright owned by F J Tons and trained by James S Everman This youngster is a halfbrother to the track favorite Hanhridge Ho is by Superman Judge Wright worked a quarter last fall as a yearling close to 23 and James Griflin the agent of the Illinois breeder J S McCullough who bred the colt sold him to Mr Pons for 2000 He seems to be a youngster of slow development but those who fancy him say that they believe before the year Is out be will prove his merit as a racer Ho is a good looker with plenly of bone and substance and lias a su ¬ perb way of going Judge Wright is engaged in the Basufonl Manor Stakes but it is doubtful if Mr Everman will be able to get him ready for that event eventThe The old board used for bulletining the entries when the auction pools were run at Churchill Downs has Iteen taken down and five electric parimutuel machines have been set up In its place The board has been relocated at the entrance to the betting ring from the grandstand The electrical work Iteing dono at the Downs tills spring is enormous as the three parimuluel machines set up In the clubhouse Inclosurc are also connected with the bet ¬ ting ring by wire The men In charge however say that as extensive as the work is everything will bo finished before Derby day
