GERMANY BUYING FRENCH THOROUGHBREDS The German government continues to pay the closest attention to the breeding of its army horses and since tho withdrawal of Count Lehndorff from oltico his successor Ilerr von Oettingen who has descrilted witli a facile pen his visits to the different countries and studs where breeding has been carried on several important purchases have l cen made of sires in France His recent visit to Paris is connected with Hlaguer II which was one of the best crosscountry horses He secured Chcri tho Grand Prix winner of 1001 and now he has bought Billion 1804 by Le Pompon Brie a Brae which carried the colors of Mr Wysocki and was deemed to have such an excellent chance for the Derby in 1K 7 that E VeilPIcard secured onehalf of him on condition that lie ran in his name He did not win but was second in the Prix du Conseil Municipal that year and won on the followng occasion to con ¬ clude his turf career in the colors of Michel Eph russi who took over the interest held by E Voil Picard
