RACING BEGINS AT BUTTE Three Thousand in Attendance at Opening in Spite of Unfavorable Climatic Conditions Butto Mont August 1 After a heavy nights rain the track for the opening day of the But to Jockey Clubs meeting was muddy with the sky cloudy and the weather threatening These adverse conditions did not deter the Bnttts racing enthusiasts from coming out to the course in force There were fully OOO persons present including prominent Iieople iu all walks of life in this city and the sur ¬ rounding country Among the prominent citizens present were Sheriff John ORonrke Dr J M Scanland County Attorney Thomas AValkcr and Sheriff OKeefe of Deer Lodge County CountySixteen Sixteen layers were in line among them being AV R Engstrom Joe Rose Gus Blnhni Bryon McNutt John Lewis AVill Hall John Troy Fred Frankel Joe Deviue Sam Summerlield Frank J Grefer Billy Semper B AVithers Pete Ryan Charley Iet tingill and AV Molesey The layers reported that there was an abundance of wagering and they lost heavily on the days results resultsFavorites Favorites fared poorly Lochiel from the Bed well stable broke badly in the principal race not being straight when the barrier went up He was ridden hard all through the race but could not make ip the ground lost at the start startJockey Jockey J Henry rode Envy from the outside straight across to the inner rail after the field had left the barrier in the third nice forcing the fa ¬ vorites Al Blocli and OKonite to pull up and Icstroying their chances entirelv The judges fined jockey Henry 25 for rough riding ridingWicket Wicket fell in the homestretch but jockey Cotton escaped unhurt
