THE OFF SEASON IN RACING IN ENGLAND Minor Meetings Through August Lomond Is tho St Leger Favorite English Turf Statistics London August 24 Between Goodwood and York no meeting of commanding imjiortaiice takes place in Kngland and for several weeks witli here and there an exception the eqnne stars of the year are in retirement but not altogether in idleness being kept in that condition of training requisite to enable to meet valuable engagements at York IJoncasler and the Newmarket autumn meetings In the meantime the meetings that do take place are of decided local interest to those living near the tracks where they occur and are well patron ¬ ized and as a rule quite profitable particularly those at Brighton Ilaydock Park Lewes Sandovvn Park Birmingham Kemptou Park Gatwick Leices ¬ ter Ayr Nottingham Rcdcar Windsor Stockton and Hurst Park So far as the greater meetings are concerned York is near at baud and two weeks later the Dolicaster September meeting will arrive to bring about the decision of the St Leger Champagne SJakes Doncasler Cup and other events of impor ¬ tance tancePeople People are beginning to realize that the running of the St Leger is not far away and of late there has Ixen considerable antepost betting in which Lomond has figured as favorite with the American colt Tracery second choice Lomond was beaten hv Klherie at Brighton when attempting to concede rin latter ten pounds Imt later at Kemptou Park yave White Star much weight and a decisive beating iu the St James Slakes in such effortless fashion as to convince good judges that he has completely recovered from his ailments and is now iu the brilliant form that marked his career when a two yearold Whether this is correct or not remains to be seen but at any rate he is a strong favorite jiow at 2 to 1 while to 2 is laid against Tracery The latter has not been seen iu public since he won the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood but is thriving and doing everything asked of him in his work There are many who think he will slay the long St Leger route better than Lomond The latter is a son of Desmond and the Desmonds while gifted with extreme speed have not been noted as stay ¬ ers Maiden Krlegh Hector and Catmint have had some St Leger backing but so far Tagalie and Sweeper II have not been quoted although both ire deemed sure to go to the post if all goes well with them and are training satisfactorily There are others that please their connections and it is expected that at least lifteen threeyearolds will contest the St Leger Danny Maher was to have ridden Traccrv but report is that Lord Rosebery will require his services to Tide Charmian in the race raceIn In connection with Lomonds St Leger prospects M D Peacock the trainer of Etheric is sorry that the colt is not engaged in the St Ieger so that he could meet Lomond at level weights Referring to the two horses the Middleham trainer said lie had read that Lomond was a different horse at Kempton to what he was at Brighton and that if Ktherlc had met him again at Kemptou he would have beaten Etheric as easily as he beat White Star 1eacock added I do not understand this argu ¬ ment My horse beat Lomond at ten pounds at Brighton over a course which suited Lomoud be ¬ cause the Brighton course is like tho Kpsom course where Lomond dees all his work and which did Hot suit Ktheric because Klherie is a far striding horse which wants a galloping course and I jo not understand why they should say that if Ktheric had met Lomond at Kempton at the weights the result would have been different Peacocks con ¬ tention is that Lomonds easy success at Kempton only goes to provo what a good horse Etheric is The Deil which has probably run in more races than any horse at present in training in England though Master Hopsou must run him close was purchased as a foal by S Braime the Ilphave trainer for 7 on behalf of Mr ColtonFox The son of El Diablo ran his first race as a threeyear old and th ii started to win useful sprint races Even now in his thirteenth year he has shown some form in selling plate company companyThere There was probably a record created by the re ¬ sult of the Castle Selling Plate at Lewes for the placing were monopolized by three Saints St Auslle being first St Swithin II second and St Distaff third After this who shall dare to impugn the morality of racing V VJames James Daly has purchased the yearling half sister by General Symons to Hornets Beauty from Michael Dawson the Curragh trainer at a long price priceD D T Cogan has refused an offer of 25000 for his smart juvenile Sleipuer which is held to bo the best Irish twoyearold of PI12 PI12The The Lewes meeting is the oldest racing fixture in the country of Sussex it having been founded as far back as 17 17Bachelors Bachelors Button is to be sent to France having IKCII acquired from Sol Joel by the Marquis Decazcs DecazcsThe The struggle for supremacy among leading win ¬ ning owners is remarkably close and interesting be ¬ tween a group made up of Lord Derby W Raphael K Hut Ion and T Pilkingtou with the first named holding a slight present advantage The winning of one big race will probably decide which of the four will tinallv figure as the leader for 1912 and in that line Lord Derby has his chance in the 50000 Jockey Club stakes with Stedfast as does Mr Pilkingtou with Prince Palatine Messrs llultou and Raphael will be iu opposition for the rich spoils of the Don caster St Leger witli Lomond anil Tagalie re ¬ spectively After the two big races are decided there will be but two contenders for the premiership At present the owners whose horses have won 15000 or more and their respective stable earnings are as follows followsWinning Winning Races Amount AmountOwner Owner Horses Won Won of Gallinnle and his sou Sanlry The same amount will however apply for a little longer and therefore they along with such as Ayrshire Sundridge Missel Thrush Laveno and Americus may become prominent again quickly Heli ¬ cons recent victory at Redcar enabled Cyllene to make his first move for several weeks and now the expatriated son of Bona Vista is more securely fixed at the head of affairs than ever especially as his nearest attendants St Frusquiii and Persimmon re ¬ main just as they were Chaucer too has not ef ¬ fected any advance and in consequence resigns the fourth place to an elder difference may uot be so great as to prevent the younger jockey shortly re ¬ suming the lead Third position contiuues in the hands of Whalley who appears tolerably assured of it for some time to come but for the fourth it is still a near thing between Foy Trigg Clark and Wheatley and in connection with the second named a note may be made of the fact that he has had over 400 mounts a number
