MINERAL SPRINGS MEETING SUCCESSFULLY INAUGURATED The Mineral Springs Jockey Club made good yes ¬ terday in that its first day of racing was success ¬ fully conducted and the racing was as good as was to have been expected The attendance was hardly as numerous as had been anticipated 2500 probably being a fairly correct estimate The repeated post ¬ ponements preceding the actual opening was a fac ¬ tor that doubtless had an Important bearing on the matter of patronage at the gate Those Avho jour ¬ neyed to the track were taken there comfortably and expeditiously the advertised schedule of one hour from the La Salle street station to the track being adhered to They found the track appoint ¬ ments still incomplete in many details but made allowances and manifested a satisfactory interest in the racing racingThe The only marring incident of the sport was the falling of Inclement In the fifth race The accident was due to tripping from becoming tangled in a loosened bandage W Hobbins his rider was thrown heavily The accident occurred after pass ¬ ing the far turn and before the lioy was brought back to the paddock rumors of serious if not fatal injury Hew alxmt Medical aid was at hand and invistigation showed his injuries to l le e no more important than pajnful scratches on the face The lad is a sou of Bone Doctor Bobbins who fortn erlv trained for Barney Schreiber and is an unlucky little chap in having experienced a number of other accidents on falling horses horsesThe The racing program was exclusively at sprinting distances tlie longest race being at six and a half furlongs A mile dash had been on the program but did not fill Better things in the way of longer distance racing are promised The various races were promptly dispatched tlie last race of the day being called at 410 p in The riding was free from rough practices Kach race was easily won but not without strenuous contention while coming down the homestretch Considering the newness and raw ¬ ness of tlie course the times scored were excellent In fact after Sir Blaise had won at threequarters in 114 starter Dick Dwyer said This is the fast ¬ est brand new track I have ever seen And Dick has helped inaugurate quite a nunroor His own work at starting was excellent and prompt promptTo To Working Lad with Musgrave up fell the honor of winning the first race over the new track Coreopsis Iwing his closest attendant at the finish with od Fnneuil Hall a goodthlnL TJilslwas a dash of threequarters arid easily won The main race of the day was tlie fourth an J800 handicap handicaptat tat threequarters of a mile with nine speedy horses going to the post including such good performers as Effcndi Ozana and Bettie Sue The horses ran bunched nearly all the way but in the last eighth Sir Blaise overhauled Ozana and won in a fashion suggestive of further successes for this evidently fast sou of Llssak LlssakAs As Musgrave had won the first race of tho day he also won the last one This was a dash of five eighths of a mile for twoyearolds with eight start ers of which at least four were quite good looking youngsters Nash Cash a big chestnut son of Nas ¬ turtium had but little trouble In winning from Willis with Kelly third Of the starters Tom Ryans Dowuland and the Ort Wells gelding Glb lions seemed hardly to know what was required of them and the latter was Inclined to be a bit unruly The other races fell to Otilo Sylvestris and Casso ¬ wary waryWeather Weather conditions were of the best and if this favorable condition continues through the week Saturday should afford a good index to the measure of patronage to be awarded the track at this meet ¬ ing The crowd yesterday was hi the main mascu ¬ line although there was a considerable sprinkling of feminity in the grandstand grandstandThere There was no public betting in the sense familiar in the days of Chicago racing Such speculation as took place was on the nod or toy oral negotia ¬ tion between the persons concerned In this Work lug Lad Sylvestris and Nash Cash were decided favorites It is questionable whether any great amount of betting was done those inclined that way l eing disposed to study the new methods be fore deciding to take a chance chancelu lu this as in other ways and features the meet ¬ ing is in the experimental stage and It will require several more days of racing to clearly define Its prospects One favorable indication was that the great majority while on their return seemed genu ¬ inely pleased with their days ex erieuce and hope ¬ ful that racing has returned to stay stayA A
