this afternoon Some of the best youngsters shown this season wont to the post in this stake autl despite the treacherous condition of the track a splendid contest resulted Yankee Notions winning hy a noso from Tartar in a driving finish The asso ¬ ciation added 2000 for the race and the owners of several of the candidates came over from New Ydrk to witness the running August Belmont accom ¬ panied by Mrs Belmont Mr and Mrs It T Wilson Frederick Johnson Andrew Miller anil II C Halleu beck being among the visitors The raci was marked by heavy sj ecnlation with Leochares having a slight call over the others Some doubte l Yankee Notions ability to shoulder weight and run fast but he dis ¬ pelled this illusion by racing Frederick L into early submission after the latter outbroke his opposition and showed in the lead in the run down the back stretch When Yankee Notions passed Frederick L Tartar and Leochares both moved up with chal ¬ lenges Glass kept his mount well together and when forced to a drive Yankee Notions went on gamely He was tiring at the end and just managed to last long enough to withstand Tartars closing rush The latter finished with great gamenets ami beat Leocbares a length The Schorr colt as usual was slow to begin and Teahan decided to take him to the outside The result was that he was carried wide especially on the turn into the homestretch Considering that he was giving weight to every ¬ thing in the race Imt Rock View and that he dirt not have the benefit of a more experienced rider Leochnrep ran a smashing good race and there still remains a doubt as to whether he is not the best colt shown in the east tills season Teahan entered a complaint against Butwell with the stewards I accusing the latter of grasping his raddle cloth in rounding the far tnrn
