JUAREZ OPENS BRILLIANTLY WINTER MEETING AT MEXICAN COURSE BE ¬ GINS WITH EIGHT THOUSAND PRESENT Occasion Notable for Meeting of Commanders of American and Mexican Army Forces Buck horn Wins Juarez Handicap El Paso Tex November 28 Eight thousand persons were on hand for the opening of the fourth winter meeting of the Jockey Club Juarez which was inaugurated today under brilliant and promising conditions The attendance was highly representa ¬ tive noted horsemen from all over the country as well as the elite of El Paso and Juarez society being present A notable feature of the occasion was the meeting of the commanding generals of the armies of the United States and Mexico the former being represented by Gen U Z Steevcr and staff while Mexico was represented by Oen Trucy Aubert and staff At the main entrance to the grandstand General Aubert had his troops lined up as u guard of honor to receive General Steevcr when he arrived with his stall The scene was one that probably never has been duplicated on a nice course The artuy men occupied adjoining boxes in the grand ¬ stand and were interested spectators of the racing during the afternoon afternoonThe The Juarez Handicap carrying a value of 1500 was won by the game little race horse Buckhorn the property of R J Mackenzie the Canadian mill ¬ ionaire turfman Meridian from the stable of U t Carman was carrying the top weight and was in ¬ stalled the publics choice choiceRuekhorn Ruekhorn also received grand support Meridian started out to make the pace closely pressed by IJuckhorn and Closer Buckhorn made his bid ai eighth out and passed Meridian Upright came along with a tremendous rush but Buckhprn had something left and withstood his challenge Mer ¬ idian weakened perceptibly in the tiual furlong Closer looked dangerous on the stretch turn but fell back The iiiiiainder of the field rail as if they were JiSUorr The days racing as a whole was good there being two exceedingly close finishes The betting ring was crowded to its utmost and in three races the boojs luid liberal oijds their books being liutch from three to live per cent at times timesThe The track was not as fast as had boon expected The recent rains left it in a rather deep condition and it may not be really fast uutil it has been raced iyer for some time and possibly not until more rain Tails It seems to be a peculiarity of the Juarez track that it is not at its best until the meeting is well advanced each season Among the layers oi crating today were George Rose Koy Offntt Ham Frank Izzy Hani Frank Shannon Sam Howard and Willie Applegate It is the intention of many of the layers now here to hang up their slates at the next cut in inJesse Jesse Hart the owner of The Peer was suspended for attempting to evade taking out his license
