GRAND OPENING IN CANADA TWENTY THOUSAND PERSONS SEE HEARTS OF OAK WIN KINGS PLATE Giddings Colt Makes Show of His Opposition in Ontario Jockey Clubs Historic Race Kleburne Wins Woodstock Plate Toronto Ont May 24 Twenty thousand racing enthusiasts gave the opening of the Canadian racing season a rousing good sendoff at the Ontario Jockey Clubs Woodbine course this afternoon A great many thought the crowd larger but twenty thousand is a conservative estimate of tlie attendance that poured through the gates and caused even standing room on the lawns to he at a premium long before the horses were called to the post for the opening dash It was a great day for the sport and a splen ¬ did program furnished some exciting contests Tlie main attraction the Kings Plate went to Harry Giddings Hearts of Oak an overwhelming favorite in the mntuels Hearts of Oak with J Wilson in the saddle led from the start and was never head ¬ ed He was rated in front under restraint until tlie last quarter and in the homestretch he drew away until he Jed his nearest opixment by ten lengths as the winning mark was passed Joseph K Seagrams Maid of Frome was second two lengths in advance of Robert Davies Gold Bud which in turn beat the other Seagram entry Voi vmU a head for thin place Hie race was a truly run one anil was particularly free from Interference It was simply a case of the winner outclassing his opposition Mr Giddings won the race two years ago with St IViss another colt of his own breeding by Bassetlaw sire of todays winner winnerThe The Kings Plate has been run since 1SOO It wus known as the Queens Plate up to and includ ¬ ing IIOI J E Seagrams horses won the stake from 1S91 to 1S9S inclusive and also In 1000 1001 1DO5 1100 and 190S Its distance was reduced from one and onehalf miles Sight PlatePlate ran in the Woodstock Plate Plate Glass made a runaway affair of the Trial Turse a dash of six furlongs which was run as the opening race He showed a great turn of speed for half a mile hut at the end was straight to beat Crisco a length In the juvenile purse Southern Maid ran a sensational race off none too well she quickly raced to the front and ran head and head with Miss Gayle to the stretch turn where she shook off her opposition and simply sprinted away until she led by ten lengths at the end The winner set a terrific pace the fractional time being 23 40jf 53 which marked a new track record for the distance The previous mark for four and a half furlongs was 55 Southern Maid is a black filly built on speedy lines She has quarters like a Hackney and gets to running at tl speed before she takes a dozen strides She is undoubtedly the fastest twoyearold shown at any of the tracks out ¬ side springR of Kentucky this spring R E Watkins colors finished first and second in the Minto Stakes ISarnegat coining from behind in the homestretch and beating his stable companion by a length and a half The latter could probably have won had Snyder wished wishedTho
