FAMOUS ENGLISH TRAINER DIES George Dawson eldest son of John Dawson and like his father in the front rank of rcnglish train ¬ ers died of paralysis at Newmarket Saturday June 12 Concerning some features of his career London Sportsman said lie was identified with the victories of many good horses belonging to the Duke of Portland for whom he put up a remarkable record located ft the famous Heath House he for thirteen years up ¬ held the traditions of the place where his uncle Matthew Dawson had in earlier years trained a host of classic and other winners In 18S George Dawsons first year t Heath House sixteen horses won a total of 5215 between them Melton then four years oldt Arcadian and Pearl Diver being the biggest winners the lirst and last named the prop ¬ erty of Lord Hastings The following year Ayr ¬ shire accounted for a large amount in stake money and the following season won the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby of nearly 50000 in value but his pecuniary exploits were put In the shade by Donovan which won over 80000 in stakes A memorable season was that of 1SS9 when the stable winnings amounted to no less than 30210 ° which Donovans share was 1 35 iucludiu Derby St Leger and other Important races while Ayrshire won over 100000 and Semolina 45430 In 1SK Memoir won the Oaks and St Leger con ¬ tributing largely to another remarkable year for Heath House In 181 the winnings of the stable showed a considerable drop but another good time came in 1802 when such horses ns Haeburn The Prize Inferno and Mrs Buttcrwick were the most Important winners and the following season was notable for the success of Airs Butterwick in the Oaks and the sensational defeat of Isinglass by Kaeburn in the Lancashire Plate the total of stake money now being 113085 A good year was 1S 4 when Amiable carried off the One Thousand Guineas and Oaks for the Duke of Portland and Grey Leg won the City and Suburban for the Duke of West ¬ minster In later seasons His Heverenco Lady Frivoles and Srneau were gt od winners trained by Dawson Altogether Dawson trained two winners of the Derby three of the Oaks two of the St Leger one of the Two Thousand Guineas and two of the One Thousand Guineas besides the winners of such valuable races as the Eclipse Stakes the New ¬ market Stakes twice and Prince of Wales Stakes at Ascot and among handicaps can b named the City and Suburban Portland Plate at Doncaster Jreat Eastern Hallway Handicap at Newmarket and a host of minor events Dawson trained at Heath House up till the end of 1SDS when the Duke of Portland his chief employer decided lo remove lite horses from Newmarket to Klngsclere and his ten ¬ ancy of the famous place came to a closo iFe re ¬ commenced training in 1001 but Ilie remarkable success that had attended his earlier operations did not continue Dawson was 50 years of age and leaves a widow but no family
