RICH RACE TO FLORA FINA j W JOHNSONS FILLY WINS 5000 DOMINION HANDICAP AT FORT ERIE Leads from Start to Finish and Wins with Plenty in Reserve First Sight Makes Disappointing Showing Hodge Again a Winner Buffalo N Y August C Favored by perfect con ¬ ditions for racing a vast throng crowded the spaci ¬ ous grounds of the Niagara Racing Association at Fort Erie tills afternoon and saw Flora Fina under a welljudged ride from jockey J Callahan lead throughout the route of a mile and a quarter in the 5000 Dominion Handicap and land the rich stake for J W Johnson of Kentucky Flora Fina exhibited a keen turn of speed from the outset She assumed command almost immediately after the start and jockey Callahan wisely rated her along in front She was much the best as the race was run and had ample in reserve at the finish Donerail Hamilton and Flabbergast alternated in attempting tu head the daughter of Ogden and Flora Pomona but their efforts were futile What chances Hamil ¬ ton had of being a contending factor at the finish wero nullified through his being pocketed at nearly every stage of tho trip Donerail being primarily responsible for the jMKir showing of Mr Schorrs colt which was afforded little opportunity to show it meritorious performance performanceTills Tills was the fourth running of the Dominion Han ¬ dicap Its brief history follows Year Winner AWt Jockey Val Time 1010 Jack Atkiu 6 117 G Archibd7000 204 1911 Flint Rock 3 105 B Dugan 3450 204 1012 Star Charter 4 119 Butwell 3450 203 1013 Flora Fina 4 102 J Callahan 3450 204 204A A select few profited handsomely through the sue suecess cess of Flora Fina but the concensus of expert opinion accorded First Sight the greatest considera ¬ tion This was evidently a day of indisposition on the part of First Sight the crack threeyearold at no time appearing as though he would dominate the situation Evidently he was unable to successfully concede the weight he was attempting to But lglity secondary to the Dominion Handicap from a spectacular standpoint was the fifth race in wldcl a good lot of sinInters contended over the sixfurlongs route Of the original seven entered riuKon G was the only absentee John W Schorrs BrOinsiick gelding Leochares commanded the most snpj rl while the sensationally quickbreaking western race Useeit the longest shot in the race was best backed of the outsiders although there was support for each of the starters As usual Ilseelt was first to show with Pan Zareta in close attend ¬ ance and Helen Barbee third This was the order to the head of the stretch where Taylor always within striking distance with Calgary made his bid After a furious drive through the whole length of the stretch Mr Davies sprinter just did manage to get up In time to score by a short head Leo chares the betting choice apparently left the post in a tangle At any rate he never appeared danger ¬ ous ousHodge Hodge running in the colors of W II Collins won the purse for twoyearolds that was second on the card Hodge was reserved behind Miss Gayle and Vandergrift to the stretch turn and when Tea ban called on him he came away to win with ridicu ¬ lous wise by four lengths Miss Galye beating the even money shot Vandergrift half a length for second place It looks as if Mr Collins got a cheap racer when lie claimed Hodge for 1050 1050Tho Tho layers fared well today as El Oro and Three Links were the only favorites to score scoreAs As shown by the time in each race the track is decidedly faster than it was during the previous meeting here hereR R J Mackenzie the wellknown millionaire Canadian turfman was an interested spectator It was his first appearance on the circuit this sum ¬ mer merWoodford Woodford Clay of Kentucky was among tho visi ¬ tors torsAdair Adair Baker have bought Effendi from Sam Louis LouisImmediately Immediately after the start of the third race Tankard ran into Chapultepec throwing him to his knees and Into the fence A fence rail plunged through Chapultepecs breast killing him almost Instantly
