CALIFORNIA HORSES REACH KENTUCKY Louisville Ky August C Fifteen horses belong ¬ ing to A B Spreckcls have arrived at Churchill Downs from the Napa Stock Farm in California in charge of trainer C W Carroll They embrace the threeyearold Amity the twoyearolds Galar and Manson all of which raced on the local tracks last spring and twelve other twoyearolds that have not as yet faced the starting barrier These are Alfhild br f by Voorhees Prestene by Preston Austria b f by Dr Leggo Cattle Kate by Amar b f by Solitaire II Georgio VI dam of Al Bloch and Daruma by Flambeau FlambeauAmbri Ambri br f by Puryear D Priceless Jewel by Plaudit Bodin br f by Dr Leggo The Peeress by His HisByla Byla ch f by Voorhees Chillie dam of Kar mack by Uncas UncasFarlant Farlant blk f by Dr Leggo Como by Soii SoiiaFulluh aFulluh f by Voorhees Oaviota by Crighlon CrighlonCopula Copula br g by Dr Leggo Guerara halfsister to Edda by St Serf GyKi eh f by Dr Leggo Love of Gold by Goldcrest Gymer ch f by Voorhees Saeharate by Kuig KuigHoenir Hoenir b c by Voorhees Emir by Ducat DucatAll All stood their long trip well and are in excel ¬ lent condition for training In fact trainer Carroll had several of them on the course yesterday at the Downs and breezed them half a mile as fast at 01 He is especially sweet on some of the fillies and thinks well of the colt Hoenir The latter is a bit undersized in height but is a blockily built voungster and l efore lie was shipped from Califor ¬ nia showed good speed in training at Napa The dam of this colt Lmir was bred by E Corrigan and she is out of that turfmans famous race mare Mobalosca a daughter of Apache which horse was a son of Mortimer MortimerTrainer Trainer Carroll reports that there are twentyfour vearlings at the Spreckels ranch He did think something of bringing the pick of the lot to Ken ¬ tucky in tin full but as racing prospects look so bright for the coming winter at Juarez he has about decided to take the entire collection to that place next winter and iu the spring bring the best of the lot to Kentucky Carroll thinks that young horses do better in the winter at Juarez than at any other track in the country The fifteen horses he now has in training lie will race at Douglas Park Chunhill Downs and Latonla this fall and then sell privately any that happen to meet he requirements of buyers What he fails to dispose of iu this way lie will take to Juacez to race there nest winter witli the yearlings which will be shipped to him from Napa Slock Farm FarmJockey Jockey C Kirschbaum is witli trainer Carroll at Churchill Downs and will remain here until the fall racing season begins The string Is stabled in the long barn near the quarter post where the hoiyes of It T Mackenzie and the stable of W 11 Ficr were quartered last spring springBalte Balte I turd once a famous race rider has charge at Churchill Downs of M B Grubcrs much talked alioiit yearling bay colt by McGco Gunrod by Mirthful which the Louisville turfman pur ¬ chased from C W Moore of Lexington not long since for 2500 This youngster now stands i shade over fifteen hands and weighs 875 pounds and Hurd aspects to begin breezing him for short distances in a few days Gunrod the dam of this colt is out of the gamous Royal Gun the dam of Gunfire Trigger Raglan Yankee Gun and Hot Shot Hurd rode Apollo to victory in the Kentucky Derby of 1SS2 He rode many famous horses in the early eighties for W Cottrlll G B Morris and the Maryland turfman Gov Bowie the stars lie piloted in those days to victory including such cracks as Crickmoro Compensation AVedding Day Duke of Kent Gold bug Oriole Creosote Little Phil Matinee Moua and the Kentucky Derby winner of 1881 Buchanan Hurd now weighs at least 100 pounds and recently celebrated his fortysixth birthday birthdayTrainer Trainer Shelby West has only three horses of the Doerhoefcr West stable now quartered at Chur ¬ chill Downs These are Jimmie Gill Gold of Ophir and Grover The latter is a twoyearold brother to that speedy illy Madeline B Since the Latonia meeting closed Jimmie Gill has been gelded and he is now taking exercise again Trainur West let George Ham take Times Nightmare to Canada and the rcsf of the stable are also in Canada in charge of Pres West Gold of Ophir will not be raced much in Kentucky the coming fall She is partial to the Juarez track and trainer West intends to get her in good form for the Mexico winter meeting meetingGeorge George T Long has six yearlings in training at Churchill Downs only one of which Is a colt he lielng by Seinpronius lit expects to send in from Ilushford Manor Farm the coining week a half dozen more youngsters of tills age to lie track broken before the return of trainer Pete Coyne from Saratoga with the Long racing stri a month hence All the yearlings at the local tracks are looking exceedingly well
