GOSSIP FROM KENTUCKY SOURCES SOURCESLouisville Louisville Ky August 13 Trainer John Walters has engaged stable room at Douglas Park for George M Hendries big string of horses which will be shipped to Kentucky soon after the close of the coming meeting at Windsor In the Hendrie stable are the noted threeyearolds Great Britain and Rifle Brigade and a band of likely twoyearolds several of creditablyC which have raced creditably C F Buschemeyers threeyearold gelding Haw ¬ thorn will be shipped to Churchill Downs by trainer W S Trevey as soon as the Saratoga meeting closes It seems that Truvey was not greatly disappointed because Hawthorn failed to stay the full mile and n quarter in the Travers Stakes and he Is consoling himself with the knowledge that at the end of a mile the son of Hastings was leading his opposition The program with the big gelding Is said to be to run him during the coming fall meeting only In short races as both owner Buschemeyer and trainer Trevey are of the opinion that he can hold his own with the best sprinters now in training It may be that by racing him this season only in short races after n winters rest the ill effects of his early spring sickness will be counteracted and he will then be prepared for longer races such as the Kentucky Handicap which will again be the feature of the opening of next springs racing at Douglas Park ParkHarwood Harwood the sou of Frontenac and Poetic which has won four races and been placed In fourteen other starts as a twoyearold this season must bt regarded as a bargain horse He was sold is a yearling nt the Lexington auctions last fall for the insignificant sum of 40 This youngster was bred by J S McCullough at his farm near Urbanu 111 and Hurwoods sire Frontenae is now located in the stud at that place Frontenuc was a brilliant race horse and there is no better bred sire in the stud He is by the great Kingston and his dam Kylvubcllo by the English Derby winner Bend Or is not only the dam of Mellsande Flying Squadijn Molcsey and Reform but Is also the grand dam of Broomstick and a half sister to the Epsom Derby winner St Gatien Poetic the dam of Harwood is a daughter of the brilliant race horse Michael and comes from the Maria West family James Griffin who is now at Douglas Park with a string of the McCullough horses thinks that Frontenac will sometime sire a really sensational horse Capt horseCapt James Jacobs who has charge of the polic ¬ ing of the three big Kentucky tracks Douglas Park Churchill Downs and Latonla and also tho Jockey Club Juarez course hi Mexico is resting during the summer in this city having declined an engagement in a like capacity at two Canadian tracks this sea ¬ son He intends to confine his attention In the fu ¬ ture solely to the Juarez course and the Kentucky trucks with which he has been so long connected connectedGeorge George H Llndenbjrger official timer at all the above tracks is also spending the summer at his home here hereWilliam William Gersts string of twoyearolds now quar ¬ tered at Douglas Park eight In number arc looking extra well Several of the Gerst twoyearolds that wore quite promising as yearlings were sick in Tennessee early last winter When trainer George Hum returns from Canada with the main division of the Gerst stable during the lust of this month he will surely be agreeably surprised by the good condition of the youngsters he left here
