THE REAL PRICE OF PRINCE PALATINE Full particulars of the sale of Prince Palatine have been received and are interesting The price J B Joel gave for him was 45000 guineas A guinea is 504 in our money so the real price In dollars was 234000 But there was an agreement that this price was to be reduced by 25000 In case the horse should be beaten in any of his remaining closed engagements of 1913 It happened that he was beaten In the Goodwood Cup the day following that on which particulars of the sale were published in the English newspapers so this agreement became effective right then and there and made Prince Pala ¬ tines real price to his new owner 209OOo This is considerably less than the 250000 cabled to this country as his price but even so is 20000 more than the previous highest price on record Concern ¬ ing the sale London Sporting Life of July 31 said value reduced to American tcniis Following thp continuation of tUv sale of Prince Palatine which Mr Jack Joel yesterday completed from Mr T Pilklligttm for the record sum or 45000 guineas we are in a position to give some very interesting facts as to the details and conditions of the sale In the first place the son of Persimmon is not to be delivered to his buyer until after the Jockey Club Stakes which In all probability will terminate his racing career Mr Pilkington has stipulated that Prince Palatine is not to leave the country for five years and he has take five subscrip ilous to the horse for himself and his friends The fee has been fixed at 400 guineas and subscrllicrs have to book up to three seasons seasonsThis This constitutes the record figure ever giveu for a thoroughbred The previous liest was the 37500 guineas which At B Blanc gave for Flying Fox at the dispersal of the late Duke of Westminsters horses In March 1900 1900A A few weeks ago it was said that The White Knight had been purchased for 40000 guineas but the sale was not completed Ormonde realized 150000 when bought by Mr Macdonough an Ameri ¬ can millionaire Another horse of recent days to fetch a big price was Craganour which was pur ¬ chased by M Marlines 1 Ho a few weeks back for 30000 guineas and is now pn his way to the Argentine The Argentine breeders have been verv free buyers pf English bloodstock when a likely sire has been going and it will be recalled that Cyl Ittiie was bought for the OJo de Agua Stud out there for 157500 in 190S To the same country also went Diamond JUblice for 150000 and Polar Star for M UOO while Rock Sand went to America at 127000 Another high priced race horse was Sceptre for which Sir William Bliss gave 123000 She It will be remembered also realized the high ¬ est price ever known to be paid for a yearling viz 10000 guineas which Mr R S Slevler gave for her at that age ageThere There are other instances of thoroughbreds real ¬ izing five figures though only two others have brought 100000 They were Galtee Atore which was sold to the Russian government and St Blalse the Derby winner of 1SS3 Which fetched that price on the dispersal of Air A Belmonts horses in America in 1SU1 Other high priced horses were Jiatchbox which was bought bv Baron HIrsch for Sir Freder ¬ ick Jolutstone for 75000 and afterwards trans ¬ ferred to the Austrian government for i90000 Common for which Sir J B Maple gave 75000 Meddler which realized 72500 and Doucaster 70000 70000In In the present season Prince Palatine has run but twice winning the Coronation Cup at Kpsniu lieating Long Set by three lengths and the Gold Cup sir Ascot In which he again proved his super ¬ iority to Stedfast beating the latter by a length and a half This was the race in which Trncery was brought down by a man stepnjng onto tln course Altogether during his turf career he won 181770 hi stakes
