LIKE PARI-MUTUELS IN NORTHWEST. Winnipeg, Man., October 31. The report of E. L. Richardson, secretary of the Western Canada Fair and Racing Circuit, covers the results of a successful season. From the report the following notes are of general interest: from thefrhany expressions that 1 have heard of tlie success of the various race meetings in the circuit this year, there is every reason to believe that tlie circuit lias been a decided benefit to all its members. The circuit also undoubtedly made things more convenient for the horsemen, and did a great deal to bring each exhibition and turf club in the circuit into prominence. This years circuit included seventeen race meetings, commencing May 19 and ending August 2S. The purses offered for harness races totaled 47,250 and for running races 8,450, making n grand total of S205.700. Tlie question of colored riders or drivers being permitted to ride or drive on the circuit tracks was discussed during the year and the stand taken that it was scarcely fair to put such a regulation in force while the circuit was in progress. "One result of the formation of the Western .niacin Fair and Racing Circuit which lias already been felt, is the better control which tlie judges and starters have over riders, drivers and owners. With efficient judges and starters going from point to point, the old state of affairs is impossible and this is undoubtedly a long step towards cleaner lacing. A feature in connection witli the circuit this year which deserves special mention is tlie operation of pari -mutuel machines to the exclusion of book-making. Iari-mutuel machines have been operated at Winnipeg and Calgary for the past three years, but up to this year have always been operated where bookmakers were also permitted concessions. This year for the first time pari-mutuels only were operated at Kegina, Calgary and Edmonton. The results were most satisfactory and added a gTeat deal to the success of the meetings at these points financially as well as in connection witli their influence towards better racing."
