SMART SET HIT THE LAYERS HORSES BACKED 3Y "WISE" MONEY WIN SEVERAL RACES AT CHARLESTON. La Patrie Carries Colors of Raleigh Colston to Victory in Juvenile Race Ancon Once More Changes Hands. Charleston, S. C, January 2. Continued bad weather and track conditions caused a reduced attendance at Palmetto Park this afternoon, although it .was ladies day. All the races, except the two-year-old scramble, contested by eight fillies, were under selling conditions and brought together ordinary fields. From a speculative standpoint it was a banner day for the smart set, who hit the layers heavily. The public, apd form students had an unprofitable day. "A" La Patrie, a black filly by Out of Reach Cou-suelo II., running ip the colors of Raleigh Colston, won the "baby" race iu handy fashion, with Norma L. second and Kewpie third. The winner showed a high flight of speed and handled herself impressively throughout, but it is doubtful if she would have had the easy time she did had not Idiola bolted on the first turn and unseated jockey Byrne. Idiola at the time was running on-almost equal terms with La Patrie, with every indication of continuing a game struggle to the finish. Byrne was uninjured by his tumble and the filly stopped herself just in time to prevent crashing into the fence. Kewpie was a sufferer by Idiolas bolt and showed a nieri torious performance in taking third place. Ancon, which has repeatedly changed owners since his advent here, was again transferred after his victory in the selling handicap for sprinters at six furlongs, that featured the card. lie was entered for 5700 and was bid up to 00 by William Walker, who became his owner at that figure. The public and form followers supported Americus in this race, but the "wise" set backed Ancon confidently. Ancon was put to a hard drive to outstay Robert Bradley, with Americus third. The "smart set" began the day auspiciously when Jezail, which had received stout support, cantered home in front alter a slow beginning. J. MeTag-gart had the mount on the winner today. In former star.ts lie had been handled by Cbappell and iisualv finisjied far- lnck. " Another clean-up of the "wise" brigade followed Silas Crumps easy victory in the fifth. Batwa was thought to be a serious factor in this race, but his showing was decidedly rank and he finished a distant trailer. The stewards had an interview with his rider, Pickett, after the finish and will look into the race further. Owen Pons won his first purse of the meeting when Dicks Pet beat an ordiuary band in the concluding race. The failure of M. C. Kelley. trainer of Colonel Cook, to make good the run-up money within the specified time vesterdav afternoon, caused that horse to be offered for sale again after the first race this afternoon. He was bid up to ,005 last night, but onlv brought F905 today. The difference, according to .Tockev Club rules, will have to be made good by owner C. C. Smithson. Later the stewards announced that because of the inconsistent running of Colonel Cook, his entry will not be accepted in future. I. Gallagher, former owner of Supreme, repurchased that horse from II. Phillips, who took him out of a selling race last week. A. J Stafford has been re-engaged to train the horses owned by J. F. Sweeney and James Bean, of Washington. E. J. McGraw returned from Baltimore this morning. William Shields is expected back from Philadelphia tomorrow. M J. Savage, a local turfman, purchased the three-year-old filly Trade Mark from J. L. Holland yesterday. Slow work was again the rule this morning on account of the bad going, the best trials being: Benedictina Three-quarters in 1:22. Brvnlimah Seven-eighths in 1:40.
