CHARLESTON RACING IN H.EALTHY STATE. Palmetto Park Patronage Constantly Increasing, with Betting of Good Volume. Charleston, S. C, January 11. Racing at Palmetto Park during the past week found a majority of the winners coming to the judges stand in whipping linishes. Keen racing was the order and the spirited contests aroused much enthusiasm among lollowers of the snort. The efforts of secretary Martin Natbanson were responsible in a good measure for the well-balanced programs that have been the rule rather than the exception. Favorites won liftcen of the thirty-six races run during the week and in nineteen instances less than a length separated the first two horses. Eleven of the winners were lirst home either by heads or necks. The patronage has shown a steady increase and with it lias come an increase in the volume of s leculation. There is plenty of money here and the books are finally getting some breaks in their favor, fourteen layers were in hue Saturday and the prediction that there would be at least twenty operating at one time during the winter may be finally ualized. When a layer can handle as much as ,U0O to a race, conditions are healthy and some of the layers have topped this iigure on several occasions. On Friday last Johnny Lewis, who recently arrived from Juarez, handled ,000 on the last race. He handled 2,000 on Thursday and 1,500 on Friday and he is by no means the biggest operator here. W. G. Yauke, W. R. Engstrom and Tom Shaw probably handle much larger sums than Lewis does, but the hitters operations afford a good line ii me volume of business. The layers got some good breaks on Saturday a. id several of them had a considerable margin in their favor at the conclusion of the afterr.oons business. Track conditions here this winter have militated ;:gainst fast time. The footing has been rather de?p anil witli tlie idea of improving it. L. A. Cassidy had the track scraped this morning, which means that faster time should be recorded from now on until the next rainy spell sets in. Racing conditions during tlie past few days have been ideal, the weather being warm and summerlike and tlie track in good condition. For seme reason difficulty lias been experienced in having tlie races for two-year-olds till well. This accounts for the absence of "more of sin h contests. However, witli the prospects of a good fast track for the coming week, several of tkes? events will probably be carded. The balteruieii were prominent during the week. The winners in ten selling races were bid up and fi.ur of th.in -!iai:ged hands. Th total amount of run-up money wii $;i,2t0. High Class was bid up ; from to I05 aid retained: Earl of Savoy, euro from 5700 to 1914.sh0.1 and retained ami then from 1914.sh00 to $:00 and bought by J. O. Talbott: Big Dipper was run up from $:!00 to 00 and sjld to M. A. Colton: Dr. Jackson from 00 to :nM and bought by .1. W. Iledrlck. and Skeets from 00 to 1914.sh00 and sold to W. C. Weant. W. Iledrh k figured prominently in the bidding. The stable of A. Weber furnished the winners of both of the stake events run during the week in Grosvenor, which won the Battery Park Selling Stakes on Wednesday, and in Winning Witch, which won the isle of Palms Selling Stakes. The latter t!si won another race during tile week. .1. O. Talbott won three races, while W. G. Yauke. J. W. Iledriek and .1. Mahoney won two each. Jockeys J. Callahan, II. Sumter and J. McTag-gart rode tour winners each; Byrne three and Buxton, Borel, McCahey. .1. Deavenport and E. Martin, two each. II. G. Bedwell still leads the winning owners by a good margin and J. O. Talbott is second.
