SEASON WELL ADVANCED PALMETTO PARK MEETING ENTERS UPON SECOND HALF OF ITS SCHEDULE. Forty Days of Seventy-Eight Scheduled Have Passed Into History Sherwood Is Returned Winner of Days Feature. Charleston, S. C, January 15. Today marked tin; beginning., of the second half of the scheduled seventy-eight days of racing at Palmetto Park. Weather and track conditions were favorable for good siM.rt and a big crowd was in attendance. A handicap at live and a half furlongs was contested by several of the best racers here. Sherwood, extensively backed, was returned the winner, with Celesta, the runner-up and High Private third. It was the hitters lirst start of the season and his showing this afternoon indicates that he will be a formidable factor in the remaining fixtures to which he is eligible here. Celesta might have won the purse but for frequent interference that she suffred during the early running. Considerable interest attached to the running of the "baby" race at the lengthened distance of three and a half furlongs. Several new ones made their debut in it, including Moscowa, a slashing looking youngster by Out of Reach Rosinante. and Itoscoe Ooose, another likely one hy Dick Welles- -Please. The last named, according to the "rail-birds," is a supposed crack and he was the medium for stout support. He might have won but for losing much ground on the stretch turn, where he bolted to the outside fence. Zangaree, the favorite, was put to a hard test to win over Moscowa. Electrician got up In the last few strides to beat Roscoe Goose for third money. The inconsistent Incision furnished the chief upset or the afternoon by beating Nello. the favorite of the third race. Turners masterly handling of Incision was mainly responsible for the victory. Lost Fortune, which recently was acquired by J. P. P.yrne. made good for his new owner when he won the fifth race, for which he was quoted at odds on. Hello Torre and Bulgarian fought it out for the minor jMirtions of the purse. The concluding dash went to Sir Deiirah by a close margin over Dr. Jackson, with the favorites, Joe Stein and Yorkshire Boy, unplaced. J. W. Hedrick bid un the winner from his entered price of 00 to 1914.sh05, but failed to get him. T. W. Chicago OBrien was an arrival today and will remain Tor the rest of the meeting. Judge Monck has been transferred to C. Herliert and ,wjll run in his interest in future. The Turk, which carried U. F. Carmans colors in the handicap was making his lirst appearance in public in almost three years. It was the second time that Mr. Carman had succeeded in getting him to the post since purchasing him at a stiff ligure. W. K. Tyreo, brother of Dr. J. S. Tyree, who has a big string of horses here in charge of J. J. McCaf-ferty, was an arrival from Washington and will remain for a couple of weeks. Willie Daly, son of Mike Daly, who rode that sturdy campaigner Claude in many of his races, made his reappearance in the saddle after an absence of four years.
