1 ; 1 i ! , J , , , 1 1 , ; PERFORMANCES OF HAMBURGS BEST SON IN RECENT AMERICAN RACING t Buskin is the best representative Hamburg has sent into racing in this country for a number of years past. In part the fact that he lost rank in the list of our successful stallions may be ascribed to his owner having sent the pick of his progeny to be raced in England. But aside from that important factor, it is obvious those of his sons and daughters retained for domestic racing have done little to keep his fame ;,i"ien in the land of his birth. Hamburg was Hanovers best son and, being now nineteen years old, is approaching old age, as horse life goes. But lie is by no means too old to yet sire another as good as Burgomaster and, for the sake of the splendid native line of descent, he represents, it is to be sincerely hoped it will he his fortune to do so. Buskin is not of the Burgomaster class by any means, but he is a good horse when at his best and if Hamburg had been represented by several more like him this year his place in the !ist of twenty leading sires would have been assured. As a two-year-old in 1912 Buskin, took part in thirteen races, of which he won five. He was one of a band bred by II. 1. Whitney and turned over to Albert Simons for training and to be sold as buyers might turn ui. It thus befell him that while Ids ii:st start was in Mr. Whitneys name his second was as the pioperty of C. II. Bobbins and his third in the ownership of John Wlialen, who still owns him and for v.lom he proved a profitable purchase. His lirst start was in a purse race of live-eighths of a mile at Iim-lico. May 0. in which he ran unplaced to Ilorrou, Spring Maid and Hot Water. .May 10 he ran second to Spring Maid, beaten a neck in 1:02 if,, at the same distance. He was then sold to Wlialen and lost in three i; cos for him before scoring his maiden victory. This occurred at Montreal, June S. in a dash of live-eighths, in which, carrying 100 ixiunds, he won easEy from Brawny, 111: Rock View, IIS, and six others. Even though greatly favoied in the weights, it was no slight tiling to defeat two such cracks as Brawny and Rock View, so Buskin advanced in public esteem. He won his next race also, a sprint of five and a iiaif furlongs, at Fort Erie, July 4, in which he defeated Monocacy, Tartar and Burnt Candle and won rasly in 1:07, with Monocacy second and the 9 to UO favorite, Tartar, third. After that he seemed to tvjiii off and was unplaced in three races. But late in the fall he was in good form again and won Ids last three races. November 7. at Iimlieo, over a s.oppy track, with 109 pounds up, he won at three-quarters of a niFe in 1:14 from Tarts, 107: Abdon, 97; Hobnob and Virile, 110 each; Flying Fairy and 1hyllis Antoinette, 107 each, and Monmouth. 07. lie was at 15 to 1 and Tarts was 7 to 5. At Jamestown, November 10. he won the Fairfax Hotel Handicap and. carrying 10S imjiuuIs, defeated Nash Cash. 95; Tartar, 110; Scallywag, 101: Barnegat and Rosturtiuni, 105; His Majesty. 108: Iankliurst, 110 and Buttery, 97, at three-quarters of a mile. 1:13. His next and last race of the year was better still for, besides" beating one of Lis own age in l.Aiglon carrying 90 pounds, he took up 102 pounds and won at the same distance in 1:12 from such excel .ent older racers as Caugh II III, 124 pounds; Prince Ahmed, 108; G rover Hughes, IIS; lie-Mini, 115, and Royal Tea. 101. Buskin began his career as a three-year-old by running second to Ten Point in the Belair Handicap at Havre de Grace. April 12. The distance was three-quarters of a mile and Ten Point won by two lengths in 1:13. Frederick L. was third and Caugh Hill. Grover Hughes and Lochiel ran unplaced. He carried Wl pounds to 108 on Ten Point. At the same track, May 1. he again finished second to Ten Point. This was in the Susquehanna Handicap at a mile and seventy yards. This time Ten Point carried 117 tionnds to his 51.2 and only defeated him by a half length in a punishing finish. John Furlong, 124 pounds, was third ..lid Lochiel, 105; Adams Express, 120; Flabbergast, 102, and Mission. 107. ran unplaced. It was a fast run race, the lirst mile being covered in 1 :3S:5f, and the full distance in 1 :43. May 5, at Pimlico, he won a purse at a mile in 1 :3!4i from Dr. Duenner. Pandorina. Mediator. Tartar, Kormak and St. Joseph but o:i .May 10 could only finish tliird to Bock View and Lochiel at a mile in 1:40, eight others finishing behind him. He redeemed himself May 20 by winning the Preakness Handicap, for three-year-olds at a mile and an eighth. In this lie was given 117 pounds, tin- other starters, weights and order of finishing being Kleburne, 111 jiouuds: Barnegat. 104: Scallywag. 10i; Cadeau. 10S: Cogs. 109; Flabliergast, 10S, and Lohe.i-grin. 100. He only won from Kleburne by a neck in l:!:,. hut Kleburnes subsequent racing showed that i was a highly meritorious performance at the weights. Then he was taken to Toronto and, in a mile purse race. May 27. ran thrd to Ilorrou and Flabbergast in 1:40. but had stumbled and gone to his knees in the race and did well in finishing where he did. In the Toronto Cup. at a mile and an eighth. Ilorrou gave him six pounds and beat him by a length in 1:52".-,. but he finished in front of Plate Glass. Lochiel, "iff Edge, John Furlong. First Sight and Yinir. At Windsor. June 3, he again ran second to Ilorrou. This was in the Windsor Hotel Cup, at a mile and an eighth, run in 1:54. Ilorrou carried 115 pounds to his 110 and won by two lengths. Mediator was the only other starter. The fact is that Horron was the lndter race horse of the two and. for all any one knows to the contrary, he may he the best three-vear-old of 19i3. At any rate he won all of his races like a high-class one. When iteame to the running of the Hamilton Derby at Hamilton. June 25. Buskin did not have Horron to contend with. A. Tur:iey concluding lie could beat him with Kleburne. In this assumption he proved to be badly mistaken. The distance was a mile and a quarter and the three starters were Buskin. 11! pounds; Kleburne. 122. and First Sight. 115. Kleburne made the pace a hot one. but Buskin went at him in the stretch and. passing him swiftly, won in a canter by three lengths in 2:05. At the same track. July 1. Kingly, carrying 95 pounds to his 109, defeated him by a neck at a mile and an eighth in such fast time an 1:51. with Kleburne, 105. tliird. Froglegs, 125, and John Furlong. 105, ran unplaced. Then he went over to Fort Erie and won the Canadian Derby. He oniy had First Sight and Barnegat to beat and it was casv for him. He was a 1 to 2 favorite and won under restraint from First Sight bv two and a half lengths in 2:0S. At Windsor, July 10. he ran third to First Sight and Hamilton in the "Frontier Handicap, at a mile and an eighth, run in 1:51. and was unplaced in his next two races. At Saratoga. August 15. he won a purse at a mile and an eighth in 1:51, with 112 pounds up, Star Gaze, with SS, finishing second and Colonel Holloway, with 93, third. Then he was beaten in six consecutive races liefore he won again in his last race of the year. This was in the Bowie Stakes of two mUes, at Pimlico November 12. He c-irried 110 pounds and, running the distance in 3:29, won by a nose from Barnegat. 105 pounds Star Gaze, 105, was third, and the unplaced ones were Top Hat, 101; Pandorina. 105; Cadeau, 101; Ringling 105; Flying Fairy, 121, and Brynlimab, 97.
