MILE RECORD IS REDUCED BONNE CHANCE MAKES NEW AMERICAN MARK OF 1:37 FOR DISTANCE. Geldimj Owned by Jefferson Livingston of Cincinnati Runs Fastest Mile Ever Recorded Over Elliptical Track in Winning Handicap at Juarez. El Paso. Tex., January IS. In winning the overnight handicap that was carded as the tilth race at Juarez this afternoon, Jefferson Livingstons five-year-old bay gelding Bonne Chance, by Orsini--Iieur de Marie, reduced the American record for one mile lo 1 :37. The record which this supplanted was Centre Shots mile in 1:37, run at Santa Anita Park in California Decemler 22. JOOS, with 105 pounds up, and twice equalled during the present Juarez meeting, first by the four-year-old .Manasseh, carrying 93 pounds, on December 12, and again by Vested Rights, a three-year-old, with 105 iiouiuls up. on Christmas Day. The Juarez track has been in such a phenomenally fast condition this winter that it was only a question of time when the American mile record would he reduced. Bonne Chalice, which cannot be rated as anything but a useful selling plater, was purchased by Mr. Livingston from .1. . t G. H. Keene. who bred the horse, Jack Keene having purchased his dam in California. Bonne Chance carried the light impost of !S pounds in todays handicap, dashed to the front with the rise of the barrier and led his Held for the entire distance. The fractional time was 23, 40, 1:11. 1:37. The winner had to he ridden out at the finish, as John Reunion, which carried the top weight of 113 pounds assigned by handicapper Jasper, was finishing with a tremendous rush in second plaee. Caiitem. one of the other lightly weighted contestants, forced Bonne Chance all the way. only giving up the struggle in tiie last few strides. The Rio Grande Selling Stakes, carrying a value of ,200. was won by Royal Dolly, at the long odds of 15 to 1. She is owned by J. E. Dwyer. of El Paso, and was well thought of by local followers of the sport. She rushed to the front right after the start and opened up a big lead. Jockey Taplin. who rode her, took no chances, hut handrode her throughout the last eighth, although her opponents had no chance to overtake her at the end. Colonel Marehmont. badly outrun in the first part, came with a whirlwind rush at the end to beat the favorite, Miinorioso, in the last stride for second place. Ivor Bogan, racing manager for C. W. Clark, millionaire turfman, arrived from California today to remain for the rest of the meeting. Leford, after finishing in the second, tried to run out of a gap and unseated jockey Crawford. The bov escaped serious injury, only lieing stunned by the fall.
