JUAREZ HAS A DEAD HEAT BELLE OF BRYN MAWR AND GENERAL MARCH-MONT FINISH ON EVEN TERMS. Judges Unable to Decide Which Is First in Third Race and Purse Is Divided Former Is Bid Up Brcokfield Wins Another Handicap. LI Paso, Tex.. January 20. The racing at Juarez this afternoon was enlivened by a dead heat. Belle of Rryn Mawr and Colonel Marchuiont came to the finish of tlie third race, a seven furlong dash, so close together that the judges were unable to separate the two and so called it a dead heat. The purse was divided. It was a selling race and one of the two winners was bid up. while the other escaped. Belle of I.ryn .Mawr was the one that the halter men had designs on. J. IL Mead did the bidding and the till v. which had only recently been purchas "1 by I. Ford from S. Veiller, was protected by that owner at ,103. Brooktiebl. which has raced in such improved form here for J. H. Mead, won another purse for that owner this afternoon when he accounted for the miie handicap that served as the days feature. The mile was run in 1::!7. John Reardon ruled favorite for the race, but failed to run as well as in his preceding starts and linished last. At the Juarez track this morning Jefferson Livingstons great gelding. Iron Mask, created a sensation when he breezed six furlongs in 1:11?.-. with jockey Lottos on his back. The work-out was in preparation for his great rial next Sunday, when the gelding will attempt to run a mile in faster time than I:."!."1!., the American record made by Salvator over the slraightaway course at Monmouth Park nearly twenty-four years ago. Iron Mask did not appear to be distressed after this mornings trial and pulled up in splendid condition. Horsemen who watched the horse today were unanimous in their opinion that he would run the mile in 1::!3. Owner Jefferson Livingston is expected to arrive here to witness Sundays trial. He will bring a party of friends to see his horse run. Straw hats made their appearance at the Juarez track this afternoon for the lirst time this year. The unusually warm weather of the last week has lad the effect of bringing out summer headgear at least a month earlier than in former years. The remains of J. II. Striker, who died in an El Paso hospital Saturday following an operation for the removal of a tumor, were interred in a local cemetery today. Deceased was a brother of Ike Striker, who is racing a stable at Juarez. He was 2S years old anil was a native of Buffalo, N. Y.
