HIGH-CLASS STALLION DIES. The stallion Martagon, the property of Col. E. W. Baird. fell dead at the Graham Stud, Newmarket, February 11. Foaled in 1SS7. Martagon was by Bend Or out of Tiger Lily, and during bis enreer on the turf proved himself a rare stayer and a genuine runner. He made his first appearance at Manchester in LSS9, and was beaten a bead by Siguoriua iu the Whitsuntide Plate of 0,000, but afterwards finished unplaced in the Kcuipton Park Produce Stakes and Middle Park Plate, these being his only outiugs as a two-year-old. In 1S90 he ran on eight occasions, winning one race, the Forty-second Triennial, at the Newmarket First October meeting. He was unplaced in tbe Derby and St. Legcr. but ran St. Serf to a head in the Bous Memorial Stakes at Ascot, and in tbe Lancashire Plate of 5,000 at Manchester finished second to Ampbion. He was unplaced in the Cambridgeshire and beaten a half length by St. Serf iu the Free Handicap. Carrying 115 pounds, he was beaten a head by Nuutborpe in the Jubilee Stakes of 1S91, aud then ran second to Bel Demonio in the Empress Prize at Kempton Park, while, after finishing unplaced behind LAbbesse dJouarre In tbe Hardwicke Stakes at Ascot, he ran third to Signorina and Orme for the Lancashire Plate. Running four times in 1892 his last year, he ran third in the "Jubilee" to Euclid and High Commissioner, and then won the Gold Vase at Ascot and tbe Goodwood Cup. At the stud he has been a pronounced success, and lias sired, amongst others, "Woolwinder winner of the St. Leger, Wuffy, Mintagon winner of the Cesarewitcli, Buckwheat winner of the Duke of York Stakes, Juqiiemart winner of tbe Royal Hunt Cup, Magic which beat Bayardo in the Goodwood Cup, and Musa winner of the Oaks. All his stock have proved good stayers.
