[eastern season opens JAMESTOWN JOCKEY CLUB HAS INCLEMENT j DAY FOR BEGINNING OF ITS MEETING. Big Crowd Turns Out iu Spite of Unfavorable Conditions — Milton Roblec. Neglected in Betting, Wins Inaugural Handicap. Norfolk, fa., April 1. — The weather was far from ideal for the opening of the Jamestown Jockey Club s spring meeting, but a large crowd braved the rain and were on hand to greet the returning thorough hreds. The fields that faced the starter were uniform v large and fairly well balanced. The Inaugural Handicap re salted in victory for .1. Stephensons three-yen-ohl. Milton Boblee. a recent arrival from Juarez, lie was overlooked by the public in the rush to back Coppertewa and Royal Meteor. Hustled to the front at the start, he opened up a good bad and was uev r in trouble al any time. Coppertovvn took second | nanny, with Royal Meteor third. I Manson. favorile for the second race, was crowded I into the f i nee shortly after the start, and sufter-I ed injuries which resulted in his bleeding profusely. II. McTsggart, who had the mount, received a slight I injury to his foot, but it did not deter him from I tilling I lie n-l of his engagements for the day. I lu the saeahlg race William Garth uncovered a ■ smart looking colt in Bal Parrs Royal Blue. He Hashed to the front shortly after the start and led ■his opposition by a good margin. A heavy fog prevailed before the running of tbe first race, which ■ uaile it impossible to disicrn colors on tbe back Bitroteh. It cleared off, however, in time for the Banning of the second race. Tbe decision of the stewards of the Charlestou meeting in reference to the attempt to ring another horse for Country Boy in a race last Friday was announced here today. The decision suspends J. Ortefl. in whose interests the horse was carded to run: L M. Lester, trainer and Frank Prior, F. J. Riley. M .1. Tiel, It. Callahan and E. G. Griiinp. In addition the horses Lajoie. and Golli-wogg are also suspended. The above mentioned were warned off the track here this morning by the inan.igeineni of the Jamestown Jockey Club. Visitors who arrived this morning Included Algernon Daingerfield who came in from Baltimore, William Garth, from Washington; Sol Litcbensteia, h New York, and Johnny Fay. from Cincinnati. J. W. Hedrick made an offer today lor the contract on jockey H. Hinphy. The lad is under con-Iract to George Kalon and the deal may be cou--ini, mated this week. The first run up of the meeting attended the sixth race, when Sam Louis bought I. M. Hedricks winner. Kininiinilv. He was entered to be sold for •t-tsio and Louis bought him on his bid of ,100. Ieii layers cut in and all reported that business was brisk. The public had a poor day, as only one favorite scored. Jockeys Butwell and McTaggart carried off th! riding honors of the day.
