AMERICAN WINNERS OF FAMED DERBY. Mr. Baryta is the fourth American to win the Epsom Derby. Pierre l.orillard was the lirst Asset leas to win it. His Ironaois, a strictly American-bred horse -and the only strictly American bred horse that has ever won the Derby — won it in 1881. William C. Whitney leased Volodyovski. an English horse, in 1001. and won the Derby with him. Richard Crokcr was the third American winner, lilis Orby. an Irish bred horse, won the event in 1007. Orli.vs dam was the American mare Rhoda B.. by Hanover. Arthur James, an English Bportssaaa, who bred Salirica. the dam of Rabelais, sire of Durbar, is a cousin of Thomas Hitchcock, who has developed man v crack lumpers in Ibis country. John I-:. Madden, the master of Hamburg Place, was particularly gratified with the victory of Durbar, and s--nt the following cable to his American owner: •Congratulate you on winning English Derby by coll out of mare not eligible to French and Kugllsn si ml books. You beat a great lot of horses with a long list of select ancestry. Signed "Madden."
