LONG SHOTS SCORE AT BOWIE. Two of Days Winners Come from Ranks of Horses Thought to Havo Scant Chance. Baltimore, Md., October i. This afternoons Bowie card was accounted for by two favorites, two second choices and two outsiders. The fourth race, a dash of six furlongs, was greatly reduced by scratches. Batwa, quoted at liberal odds, ;was returned the winner, in which such contenders as Ancon and Fathom were unplaced. The latter was installed the public choice and quit after racing in a forward position to the far turn. The third race was won by K. McBrides Colors, an odds-on choice. The dash was a selling affair. G. C. Winfrey, whose Elizabeth Harwood finished second, advanced the winner from 00 to 500. at Which figure she was knocked down to him. After a lapse of the usual fifteen minutes for payment, owner McBride entered a protest, which was upheld by the stewards and Colors was ordered resold. No bids were entered and Winfrey was called before the stewards for an explanation. His case will be dealt with as an example to others. Large lields faced the starter in a majority of the races ami an increase iu the attendance over this preceding day was noticed. The fact that it was ladies day brought out a large number of the fair sex. Souvenir programs were presented to the fair visitors. Besides winning with Colors, Edward McBride accounted for the closing race of the day with Supreme, a heavily supported second choice. Jockey J. Connors carried oil the riding honors by piloting both of the McBride winners. Gene Moyne. after an absence of one day, was back in the layers line this afternoon, as was Al Valentine. The visitors this "afternoon included K"d Corrigau and Hugh Penny. The latter journeyed over from Laurel to witness the running of his former charges, now in the stable of 1". S. Ilackett.
