CLOSE FINISH IN HANDICAP HESTER PRYNNE BEATS TRUE AS STEEL BY A HEAD AT HAVRE DE GRACE. Housemaid, Top Weight of Race, Was Right There, Too Lady Rotha Returns to Winning Form in the Caroline Handicap. Baltimore, Md., November 20. The Caroline Handicap was the feature of a well-balanced card offered to the patrons of racing at Havre de irace. this afternoon. The stake brought out a well-balanced lot or juveniles, with Andrew Millers Lady Rotha ruling the popular choice. She fully justified the confidence reposed in her by winning by a comfortable margin, with Broom Flower second and Mamie K. third. But four faced the starter, Celto being withdrawn. Lady Rotha had disposed of her opposition in entering the homestretch and was gradually increasing her advantage in the final furlong. Broom Flower, a cast-off from the Whitney stable, was a factor from the start. Mamie K. was on the inside all the way and suffered sharp interference as the field swung to the turn from the backstretch. Lady Barbary. from the R. F. Carman stable, broke tlatfooted and was exhausted in closing a big gap. The tecond race of the day. a handicap tor all ages, over the five and a half furlongs course, resulted in a keen stretch struggle in which the winner, the Montpelier Stables Hester Prynne, came from behind to beat True as Steel a short head, with Housemaid a like distance behind the second horse. Tho winner was off slowly and outrun to the stretch turn, where she was taken to the outside and finished with a keen burst of speed. True as Steel was a forward factor all the way and outlasted the topweight. Housemaid, in the final drive. The latter weakened in the last fifty yards under the heavy Impost she was asked to shoulder. Weather conditions were again unfavorable, a cold wind from the Susquehanna river sweeping the course and making it uncomfortable for the patrons. Topcoats were in demand. The racing was marked by close and exciting finishes furnished by large and well-balanced fields. Scratches were not as numerous as might have been expected. The track was in good shape. Word was received today that Charles Dwver would succeed H. U. Homan as patrol judge "at Juarez this coming winter. .Mr. Homan resumed his duties today as clerk of the scales after a two-davs absence owing to an attack of illness. k 11. 12. Watkins today purchased the useful racer JIarry bhnw, and, tlie two-year-old Mrs. Campbell at private sale from R. J. Allison. The AVatkins stable will be shipped south for winter racing. F. Itson, of Montreal, todav purchased Dancing Master from .1. O. Talbott for 00. Among the arrivals today was Teddy Merrick, a topnotch rider in the days of Guttenberg. He came down from his homo in Now Jersey to renew old acquaintances with James Fitzsimmous and other turfmen. Change was bid up to yesterday and became the property of Sam Louis.
