GOLD DAY AT CHARLESTON FRIGID WAVE HAS ITS EFFECT ON PALHETTO PARK PATRONAGE. Only the Regulars Brave Adverse Condi-tiolm at South Carolina Course Cliff Field and Ancon . Win Days Principal Evorit3. Charleston, S. C. December 10. The cold. wave that arrived here today was the severest of tho season and " militated ea against the Palmetto Park racing that the attendance was reduced to tho regulars. The track was in fairly good condition. The betting, considering the diminished attendance, was of surprisingly good volume. Two handicaps, one at a mile aud seventy yards, and one at five furlongs, w;ere the outstanding features aud absorbed most attention, both in a racing and speculative way. The last named was taken by Ancou, which won in -ridiculously easy style over Squeelc" and Sherwood after having led such speedy ones as Useeit, Yorkvllle and Briar Path from the rise o the barrier. There was a jam In the race soon after the start in which Lafferty was brushed from Undaunted. Neither horse nor rider suffered to any extent from the mishap, but the stewards immediately became active and a suspension for rough riding is in store for at least one rider when they hand down a decision tomorrow. Republican was the favored one in the other handicap, with Polly H. and Cliff Field also well backed by the "smart set" who held to the theory that the Talbott representative In previous starts here failed to run to expectations until he had raced for a time or two over the track. There must be something In their deductions, for after running forwardly to the three-quarters, he dropped out ,of It completely aud allowed Cliff Field and Polly H. to fight it out for the purse. The former won handily. King Radford opened proceedings by beating twelve others and Fred Levy beat about the same kind that ran in the second. Petelus, a medium for good support by his connections in the fifth, made good all the way and Cannock just managed, to outstay the badly handled Dicks Pet in the closing dash. Captain Duhaine, of the Pinkerton forces, returned yesterday after an absence of several days. Cap-laln Duhaine w-as called to Baltimore as a witness in the case of former jockey Upton against the Maryland Jockey Club and the Pinkerton Detecthe Agency. Upton was barred from the Pimllco track, and brought suit for ,000 damages. Taking the decision of the United States Supreme Court In the Marrone-Washlngton Jockey Club case as a precedent the trial judge ordered the jury to bria In a verdict for the defense.
