TEXAS FUTURITY IS RUN BENS BROTHER WINS STAKE RECENTLY TRANSFERRED TO JUAREZ TRACK. Sunday Crowd of Usual Proportions Visits Mexican Course and Racing Is Again Formful in Spite1 of Wretched Track Conditions. Bl Paso, Tex., December 27. Today found the customarily large Sunday crowd at the Juarez track. Tho weather was delightful, but the track was heavier than ever and on the holding order. . Notwithstanding the unfavorable track condititojis, first choices accounted for half the card. The Texas Futurity, confined to two-year-olds bred by members of the Texas Thoroughbred Association, was the particular feature of the days racing. Because of the wretched track conditions there were only three starters. Bens Brother, from the stable of J. F. Newman and Sons, ruled an odds-ou favorite, and was an easy winner after jockey Lof-tus Induced him to forego a tendency to loaf along. . Fred T., now in the stable of J. C. Ferris, was. the runner-up all the way. Lesbia owned by U. N. Vestal, was the other contestant and she was always outpaced. The race was formerly a fixture in connection with the Texas State Fair at Dallas, but has been transferred to Juarez. Favorites were beaten In the first three races. Annual Interest, the second choice, went on to an easy victory in the opener, after California Jack, the early pacenieaker and favorite, retired. In the second race Thistle Belle turned the tables on her whilom conqueror, Orimar Lad. The latter which lias won distinction as one of the most consistent horses of the meeting to date, had his usual speed, but Thistle Belle pressed him closely from the beginning and drew away after passing into the lead. Amity, the favorite, essayed the paceniaking iu the third, hut soon gave way to Fairly and the latter scored with ease, while Luke Van Zandt got up to beat the favorite for second money. Judge Gheens, which ruled first choice for the fifth, narrowly escaped defeat by Mercuriuui. The latter worked his way up from last place and lost by only a neck. Wild Bear, from which much was expected, ran a dull race and was never prominent. Judge was held at odds-on for the closing dash and made good in a hard drive with Slccpland, which, enjoyed considerable lead at one stage of the -running. There will be no racing at Juarez until New Years day, by which time it is hoped the course will be iu I fair condition at least. The management will spare liq pains in working it, to the end that patrons of thc club may be provided with sport that will be ;UJ to the Juarez standard, which of course has suffered during the long continued spell of muddy ; going. Jockey Loftus, who has signed to ride next year for S. L. Parsons and II. K. Knapp, will report to W. H. Karrick May 1.
