EXCELLENT RACING OF THE HIGH CLASS BUTLER FILLY COMELY Included in the twoyearolds engaged in the racing of 1914 were some exceedingly good fillies By reason of her unbeaten career high weights carried and quite remarkable performances on wet or dry tracks Kegret is entitled to be placed lirst In the list but James Butlers Comely also stamped herseif a lilly of extraordinary merit and promise Because of important races won early iu her racing campaign she earned penalties that put her to disadvantage so that in most of her subsequent starts she was giving av ay much weight to her competitors but under all circumstances she always acquitted herself nobly and in money won by twoyearolds was only surpassed by Kegret and Trojan Comely TrojanComely was introduced to the public In a purse race of four and a half furlongs over the straight course at Belmont Park May 20 Humors affirming her tleetness were abroad and she went to the post a good favorite at 13 to 10 all carrying 108 pounds She was cut off and knocked about early and finished second to the Moatpelier Stables Plantngenet in 51 If June 1 she scored her first triumph when at five eighths of a mile run In 100 she defeated Gloaming by a half length with Jester a bad third At Bel in out Park June 13 she made her first essay iu stake racing in the Kecne Memorial Stakes at three quar ¬ ters of a mile Except Hauberk all carried light weights 100 or 103 pounds Hauberk carried IK and slip 100 At the finish she was first by a half length in 11 with Hauberk second ami George Koesch third The other starters were Marion II Noureddin Kneore Double Eagle and Hectograph and the race was of the net value of 4COO in money and plate Her next race came on Saturday June 20 and here she showed what she could do In carrying high weight successfully The event was the rich Laureate Stakes of the net value of 002 and the starters and weights were Comely 125 pounds Sea Shell 114 High Noon 117 Cataliiia 122 Banquet 122 Kneore 114 and Noureddiii and Double Kagle 112 each The distance was live and a haif furlongs and coupled with High Noon and Catalina Comely was au oddson favorite at 2 to 7 Kldden by Joe NotUr she was reserved behind Sea Shell to the last eighth then when released from restraint rushed out into tlie lead and won from Sea Shell by three lengths In 107 A length and a half farther back her stableniate High Noon was third He subsequently proved to be himself a capital young racer racerSea Sea Shell had her revenge in the ruiling of the Hudson Stakes at Aqueduct June 25 This was a valu ¬ able event and netted S0 0 to the winner Had Comely gotten off well she would probably have won this highly desirable race but swerving at the start she was away a bad last rud while running a grand race had so much ground to make up that a close up fourth was the hest she could do In the meantime Sea Shell had raced into the lead on the turn and iu a desperate finish finally won by a head from Double Kagle with The Masqueradcr third a half length hack Comely carried 125 pounds Sea Shell and Double Kagle 114 each and The Masqueradcr 122 The distance liveeighths of a mile was covered in 100 and the other unplaced outs were Banipiet Noureddin High Noon Gaelic and Kddie Delllng Comely was not Marled again until July 10 when the Demoiselle Stakes came up for decision at the Empire City track There were only three starters but they were all good ones and were Coquette 11 pounds Comely 120 and Brigs Sister 122 The distance was five and a half furlongs Coquette made the pace throughout and tinilly won by a head In 107 because of a bit of bad judgment on the part of jockey Kederis who rode Comely Near tlk finish lie tried to shoot Comely through next to the rail and failing to find room enough had to pull her back ind come cm the outside As It was she was only beaten by Inches and would have won with another stride to go July 23 she started in the Kastview Stakes at the same track She and her stalilematc Pebbles each carried 125 while the other starters were Kaskaskia 115 pounds and Phosphor 118 The distance was threequarters of a ttille and in a stirring finish Pebbles was first by a head in 112 with Comelv econd a half length before the good filly Kaskaskia This race was well worth winning being of the net value ct 8310 8310Julv Julv 0 Comely again bad to submit to defeat and this time it was not by a stable companion This occurred in the running of the Wnkefield Handicap at five and a half furlongs and again at Empire City The starters and weights were Kaskaskia 112 pounds Comely 124 Ed Crump 110 Lady Barbary 114 Solly 10 and Kilkenny Boy 110 The track was slow but the race was run in 107 and at the finish it was Kaskaskias race by a half lengths with Comely second two lengths before Ed Crump and under the conditions was a capital race The good filly was then taken to Saratoga where her first start was in the United Stales Hotel StaUesofthrecrquarters f a mile ronjAngustfr She narrleili27 poHmlsttr107nn Garbage and in a bitterly coatCStMfinlslf failed to concede so much weight and was beaten a head bv the hitter in 112 Six lengths away Nonreddin was a bad third while Broomleaf and Jack Carey were wi pbced August 11 that sntne Garbage showed what a great race Comely had run when he himself took 127 pounds and von the Grand Union Hotel Stakes over a muddy track in 113 with Royal Martyr sec up end and Distant Shore third Comely with 127 pounds up was a 7 to 10 favorite on this occasion but wis bumped hnelc and out of any chance on the far turn She had a hard luck time of It tn general at the Saratoga meeting and was similarly treated in the Grab Bag Handicap August 2i being shuflied back and so surrounded as to Imve no chance hut was fourth and coming like a flash at the end after having been fur in the rear on the last turn This concluded her disastrous campaing at Saratoga At SaratogaAt Belmont Park September 0 she was started in the Autumn Highweight Handicap at threequarters of a mile Tor all ages Two twoyearolds and four threeyearolds contested it The Whitney three yearold Forum a halfbrother to the famous horse Harmonicon was made the favorite at 11 to 10 but when it came to where highclass speed tells its tale she ran away from him in the stretch and won eased up by a length and a half in 112 She carried 110 pounds to 120 on Forum and 124 on Surprising which finished a good third Garbage carried 100 pounds and was fourth The threeyearolds Crossbnu and Uncle Jimmie carrying 112 pounds each were far back at the finish September 14 she started in the Manhattan Handicap at seveneighths of a mile This was also a race for all ages and it was no disgrace to her to succumb to such a line race horse as Stromboll He defeated her by a Iciisth in such fast time as 124 she defeating Frederick L by five lengths while Tartar Garbage and Figinny ran unplaced The weights were Stromboli 122 Comey 107 Frederick L 115 Tartar 112 Garbage 00 and Figinny 111 The last rnce for the year this sterling tliy took place at Laurel October 12 in the Columbus Handicap for ail r s at threequarters All of the starters except Comely and her stabemate High Noon were older horses the starters and weights being High Noon 105 pounds carried 10GJ Hester Prynne 110 Comely 107 Spring Board 10 carried 110J Ten Point 133 Water Welles 98 and True as Steel OS Of the Butler nair High Noon was selpcted to win and with Butwell up accomplished his task In flawless fashion by leading all tin way and
