LEOCHARES IS A GREAT SPRINTER Is Now Over the 25000 Mark in Earnings Jim Gaffney Probably to Be Sold A Veteran Turfman Louisville Ky May IS This season the racing at the Downs has developed that Leocharos is at present king of American sprinters This fiv ° yearold In John W Schorrs stable appears to have surely ripened with age and unless weighted out of the future short races on tho Kentucky circuit tracks this spring is not likely to be beaten in a race of threequarters or less At weight for age it seems now that unless Harmoni con can take his measure he will quit the summer the champion sprinter of the 1913 Kentucky season as there is no chance for him to go against the flying Texas mare Pan Zareta which will do her early summer racing on the Canadian track Leocharcs is as yet unbeaten this season and Ills three wins at the Downs were sparkling performances First he won at five and a half furlongs with 112 pounds up in 105 next he picked up 121 pounds and covered threequarters in 112 and on Saturday last he ran the latter distance in 112 with 123 pounds up Some ex uert timers made his time in the latter race in 111 as he was beaten away from the barrier by the flying Chalmers ChalmersThis This son of Broomstick has now become more than a 25000 turf winner He has captured to date thjrtytwo races as will be seen by his record below Year Sts 1st 2nd 3d Unp Aflit Won 1012 23 11 4 r s 475 1913 23 8 7 a 5 0197 1014 24 10 0 3 5 9575 1915 33000 1450 1450Tliis Tliis shows that the fast gelding lias started in seventythree races been flrst thirtytwo second seventeen third eleven and unplaced thirteen times winning in stakes and purses to date a total of 25 M7 M7Willie Willie there is no stake engagement for Leochares at the Downs this spring as there is no sprint stake on the program this son of Broomstick bus two such events to contest for on the Kentucky circuit one of whicli is the Memorial Handicap to lie run at Douglas Park on Monday May 31 Decoration Day and the other is the Quickstep Handicap which is set for Saturday June 20 at Latonla As both of these events have 2000 added and his chances are rosy for winning at least one of them it is more than probable that again this season the Schorr gelding will once more figure in the table of the 5000 winners of the year as lie 1ms done every season that he has so far been On the turf The great racing form he lias shown in his four years is sure to attract a lot of attention when trainer James Howe first sends his twoyearold brother to the post this year This colt is one of the best looking of all the twoyearolds in training here and it is said that his trainer is sweet on his chances chancesO O A Bianchl has received another flattering offer for his successful young sire Jim Gaffney and has finally named 7500 as the figure that will buy the sire of Emerson Cochran Jim Savage and Dodge at the present time At the price horses that have proved stud successes and are young in the service have sold in the last two years the sum Bianchi has agreed to take for the son of Golden Garter seems reasonable and it is more than likely from reports that the horse will change hands in a few days daysBianchl Bianchl has had one disappointment this season in his goodlooking twoyearold Silver Cloud the name which was once worn by a great horse in E J Baldwins stable and which won the American Derby in that dead turfmans colors As this colt is a good looker and out of a mare that has produced six winners the exCalifornia turfman laid great store by him He has however badly disappointed him in his spring training and the other day lie offered to sell the goodlooking colt for 250 He will probably have another owner before this week1 if over Silver Cloud Is not by Jim Gaffney being a son of Beareatcher and the dam of tin youngster is also the dam of Viola B1 which has already produced a good colt Emerson Cochran His lack of ability to run shows that good looks are not always a sure sign of a race horse horseFormer Former starter J Holtman gives it as his opinion that W P Maxwell in charge of the race track at the Panama Exposition at San Francisco is the oldest living turfman Maxwell much desired to make the trip to Kentucky to see the Kentucky Derby run tbis spring but his duties in Cali ¬ fornia kept him from making the visit and hot disabilities owing to his old age From all ac ¬ counts ho bids fair to round out a full century and beat all records by remaining strong and hearty for such an old man He will be best reincmliercd by mauy turfmen now at the Downs as the patentee of the Maxwell starting gate and at one time his device was in operation on some of the Kentucky tracks tracksThe The first Kentucky Oaks won by Vinaigrette was not run as it is today on the closing after noon of the spring meeting Its first running was featured on the third days program of the first spring meeting of the Louisville Jockey Club in 1875 The day was Wednesday and the date May 19 two days earlier than it will be run this season The flrst Oaks had a small value com ¬ pared with its return at this time In that race Gyptis finished socond and Elcini third The latter became famous in after years as a stud matron and gave to the turf that wonderfullygood horse Prince Lief whicli beat the Kentucky Derby winner Ben Brush in both the Oakley and St Louis Derbys His career was cut short by death when a threeyearold
