FEATURES OF DOUGLAS PARK RACING Best Racers of the Time to Contend in the Kentuck Handicap Next Saturday Afternoon AfternoonLouisville Louisville Ky May 22 In the last half a con tury of rating in America many race tracks have opened thiir gates for a sprinj sprinjremained remained however for Douglas Park to have es ¬ tablished a new record as the only course that on the opwning day of its inaugural spring meeting offered a feature race with 10000 in added money The Kentucky Handicap is tlio race alluded to as it was first run on the opening year of Dtnglas Park as a spring race course on tin first day of the meeting and again on the first day of last year This year the big race comes next Saturday May 2 the seventh day of the present meeting at this beautiful track Such events as the Brook lyn and Suburban handicaps when run the first time were nowhere near the added value of this race although more valuable later on and even the liberal sum added to the first American Derby did not approach the added money to Douglas Parks feature nice niceKven Kven the greatest of all the big handicap races run In the east in the spring or early summ r season could net offer to the public the spectacle of seeing under colors that early the Derby cracks battle with the older stars of the metropolitan turr Rcgrit Is not in Douglas Parks big race but Pebbles which finished second and Uoval II that run fourth in that race are in the Kentucky Handi ¬ cap and others that ran in the Derby embrace Ed Crump Goldcrest Hoy Leo Kay Emerson Cochran and Double Eagle and some of this seven mav prove Derby winners in other races of that charac ¬ ter before midsummer rolls around aroundComing Coming down to the older horses eligible tho sensational aspect of the race looms out like the headlight of the most powerful locomotive First In tlie public heart is the mitihty Hoamer from til eastern stable of Andrew Miller one of the powers of the Jockey Club This fouryearold considered by many the champion today of the American turf may under weight conditions go down in defeat In the race but those who best know his ability Continued on second J Jage age FEATURES OF DOUGLAS PARK RACING Continued from first page the distance of the Ken ¬ at a mile and a quarter tucky Hendicap would regard the race as a cer ¬ tainty for him was it a weight for age event eventNext Next comes the great pair of horses represent ¬ ing the H P Whitney stable now on account of bereavement in the family of that turfman rac ¬ ing in the colors of L S Thompson but which are still trained by that master horseman James Itowe These are Borrow and llarmonicon both of which have scored brilliant triumphs on t lie English turf and one has won Honors in America as well It is doubtful in fact if any horse in training outlooks in grandeur llarmonicon which in his work for this big stake gallops the course like a real champion A colt that is eligible to the Kentucky Handicap which has not started this year is the Futurity winner Trojan and one of the stars in the race that has a great following is the Englishbred horse Short Grass which like the older members of trainer Howes stable en jovs the honor of having been also a winner abroad Since coming to this country he has proved himself to be one of the l cst of the older horses racing In fact his owner Emll Herz but recently turned down a tempting offer for him which is remarkable considering the fact that be is seven years old and at best cannot much longer remain on the turf turfThere There are scores of good judges of racing form who expect Hodge to win the Kentucky Handi ¬ cap this season Always a highclass racer lie appears to be now back in the form be was last spring when be finished second to Old Rosebud in the Kentucky Derby in race record time for that race Others that arc supposed to have a lookin are John Guud the Latonia Derby winner of last year Doctor Samuel winner of the Ca ¬ nadian Derby of 1014 Bradleys Choice for which once 20000 was refused Star Jasmine T C Mc ¬ Dowells honest mare and Bronzewing the winner of the Kentucky Oaks last year In fact the latter is the one that all the pikers are pinning their faith to and it would be no surprise if this filly should challenge the leaders in the stretch in the big race and lead them as the winning line is passed It is the fashion this year for fillies to grab these big races as Hogret set the style in the Derby The weights for the race will lie announced by handicappcr E W Maginu next Tuesday four days before the race is run runThe The Douglas Park spring meeting of thirteen days has already begun under flattering auspices During the final week of the meeting two other big stakes are programed to be run these being the Memorial Handicap for threeyearolds and over with 2000 added at threequarters and the Spring Trial Stakes for twoyearold with 2500 added at liveeighths The Memorial will IHJ run on Monday May 31 while the Spring Trial Stakes is set for the closing day of the meeting Saturday June 5
