HOW POMMERN WON THE NEW DERBY Pommern had not the least hit of trouble about winning the New Derby at Newmarket June 15 It was generally exacted that Mr Helmonts Danger Hock would prove his most dangerous op ¬ ponent hut he was unplaced and finished fifth In its account of the race London Sportsman of tho next day said saidThere There was not much change in the market Al ¬ though even money was accepted in some cases about Ponimern 11 to 10 against him could always be had if one looked about for it and at the finish it was a case of 10 to 1 bar one Danger Hock juid Let FIv being supported at that price The Viler and My Honald were next in demand and bar thirteen 100 to 1 was to be had A strong pace was set by My Ranald fo fast that though Pomniern was away with the leaders he soon dropped back almost last However he shortly lM gan to go through and as he reached the entrance to the plantation had gone to the front From this iwiut there was never any doubt as to the result as he treated hi followers much as he had done In the Two Thousand Guineas simply doing a strong exercise gallop in front of them Let Flv ran extremely well and showed how mi luckj he was to IK beaten bv Danger Hock in the Newmarket Stakes The surprise of the race was the third place obtained by Kossendalo and the disappointment was Gadaliout which finished abso ¬ lutely last It is possible however that all was not well with him as he retired to 2O to 1 prior to the start In all probability Pommern is the best threeyearold that we have seen far several seasons past and when Vaucluse was scratched for this race there was really no danger of anything heating him himExactly Exactly a quarter of an hour after time the lot were sent off from a capital start My Honald was the first to break the line Danger Rock and Hossendale being close up with him and then came Pommern and King Priam chtoi heading the others and The Vizier whipping in There was lit ¬ tle change in the first halfmile except that The Vizier rapidly improved his1 position whilst Pom ¬ mern dropped back amongst the last Me did not long remain there but a half mile from home took up the running from The Vizier Rossendale Achtoi and Let Fly which followed him in that order The Vizier was the first to break and Let Fly became second at the distance but could make no impression on the favorite which won easily by two lengths Let Fly lieat Hossendale by three lengths for second place Achtoi was fourth Danger Hock fifth The Vizier sixth My Honald seventh Apothecary eighth Sunfire ninth King Priam tenth The Hevenge eleventh IO Melior twelfth Flori inond thirteenth Chickamaugwa fourteenth Rush ford next and Gadabout last Approximate time
