July 2d.--Threatening weather kept some of the regulars away from the Hamilton tta. k this afternoon. The attendance, however, was large and sp. i illation surprisingly brisk. The program was largely made up of selling races and what the fields lacked in quality was made up in quantity. the full limit of twelve facing the ball Mil in most of the races. The San.lringuam Handicap, a dash of a mile and an eighth with *S lo added, went to R. .1. Austins Conitnonada. which made all the pace and heat Bamegat a length. Barnegat ran in much improved form and it Stems as if It. E. Watkius has anally rounded this useful horse Into good form again. In todays race he followed tho others until Itraightend out in the homestretch, then closed up with a rush. Jockey Kufus Shilling and his employer, t;. w. Sett, have had a disagree meal and the lad is making an effort to break the contract that the- Texas turfman holds on ins services, shilling requested the stewards this afternoon t.» pass ou the matter. The lad claims that according to a clause, in the contract, if either party at any time is dis-satisned the contract becoaaea null and void. The hid was told to produce the contract, and he wiled his mother in Texas to forward it at once. The Hamilton Jockey Club lias notified the Dominion government that it will donate a machine gun of the most modern make to the allies. Captain V. F. Piesgrave was a visitor at Hamilton today. He came from Saratoga to arrange for tlie shipment of the division of the stable that A. i. Weston has here. The entire establishment will be consolidated at Saratoga and at the conclusion of that meeting all of the horses will be shipped back to Montreal. Andrew Blakeley has arranged to ship his harass from here to Saratoga in the Weston car. Lewis Haiti gave the public an opportunity of witnessing his new- purchase. Linerald Hem. school through the field on Saturday. The tJlly was taken over ■ couple ol" jumps maj fenced well tot a beginner. Mr. Oarth has hopes ,,f developing thli mare ate .. high .lass steeplechaser by next year. •I. O. Ryrne has sold the splinter Chuckles a; private sale to B. I.. Cole. The latter will attempt to make a steeplechaser oat of the horse, At the recent meeting of the Canadian Racing Associations the apprentice rule was thoroughly dis cussed and Ihe ..pinion of a majority of the stewards was that something was radically wrong when m many good riders were unable to obtain mounts and the preference given to lads with but little expert ejice. Since his apprenticeship expired jockey Acton has been unable to gel more than one or two mounts a da. and the same applies to Me teal f and Shilling. It was decided to appoint a coinniittee. -.insisting of George ML, Htndrh. A. Dyiuent and Joseph A. Murphy to look into the matter and revise the apprentice rule. The suggestion has been offered that the Australian rule Is- adopted. This rule entitles a boj to a seven-pound allowance until he has ridden live winners: then a five-pound allowance f..r the next tea winners, and tinallv a three pound allowance for the following twenty winners, at the conclusion of which his apprentice ! alhrvance expires. Ihe scale of weights will probably be raised and. il is hoped, that this will result in owners riding more experienced jockeys.
