LEACH +, — * I Btax Jasmine, which scored such a awritorhsaa win iii the h.-implain Handicap at Saratoga when enr-ryiag the popular colors of .Maj. 1. ». McDowell, must he acclalsaed us perhaps the t.est mure, outside of Itegret, now racing in North America. Al all events Star Jasmin- for her looks is one of the best pieces if horseflesh 1 have ever laid eyes on. honest as the day is long, and apparently gets better lis she grows. rider and now seems to be developing fine staying powers. Bat few trainers. I imagine, would have had the temerity to oppose neh us Boamer, Strontboli and Gainer, star Jasmines owner, however, aaaeh to Ids credit, is ever willing to take a chance and is not to be put off by the supposed superiority of others.. | wish there were a few more like lain, then iiandicappers would find less difficulty in making their nan- , dicana stick. i Its quite a spell since the daya When Imp was carrying all before her on the Metropolitan courses and imp was. prior to this year, the last really genuine race mule to carry silk in this country. Only bud spring Peter Wlmmer, who now lias charge of Senator Camdens horses, called my attention to the now-a- days scarcity of high-class racing mares. What lias become of the Yo Tuuibiens. Maid Marians. Beckons, Si noritas. Modeatys, Firenses, Mis Wooitfords and the like/ For aoaae time past they have simply failed to exist, but this year has brought about something of a change and we now have in Star Jasmine and , Regret a COaple of mares which seem capable of holding their own with the best of the opposite sex. Sonic year* hack France produced two crack fillies in Clyde and I.a Camargo. but of late the colts have had it ail their own sray in l.a Belle France. Australia some i. ;i years a-.ro was in the fore with Wakeful, but no mare nince Wakefuls day has shown anything like first-elasa form in the laud of the southern -osSp In England I.a Fleche, Sceptre and Pretty Iolly came along pretty close together. Flair may or , .nay not liavi been a topper, her early breakdown preventing any definite opinion being formed as to her capabilities, but by no stretch of imagination can 1 he Induced to regard TagaUe, the heroine of the 1912 Derby, as anything like first-class, and Slgnorinetta, which, aided by her superior condition, managed to carry Off both the Derby and laks. is tarred by lie- same brush, and this dearth of goad fillies J do not ] profess to understand. It Is something no fellow can find out. As a general tiling fillies and mares which have ben hard run fail as producers. Beeswing, Alice Haw-It bora and Forget notwithstanding. Forget is. of course, the dam of Borrow, of that tine topper Hy las. of Dreamer, Diana Ken, etc. and is by Exile, Morteniers best American son, and it is a pity that Borrow a gelding. From the dims side he is clean bred nil the way through, bar the Kentucky cross, anil ir..c -s to Lady Lumley, ancestors of Sir Hnon. Borrow, besides his notable success this season, won the diddle iark Plate in England and would surely have been useful as ;i stallion and perhaps have saved the day for tin- bouse of Hanover. Hut. to get tiack to the Indies, neither Soopfre nor Pretty Iolly have as yet produced anything of note, tap, Ffienae, lOsa Woodford and Senorlta were comparative failures as broodmares. Beckon did better than any of them, but mares which have gone through a severe coarse of training seldom meet with much success in the paddock. Ogden, Star Jasmines sir,-, is a Matchem in tail male and a most worthy representative of the line of Solon. This line to Solon, unlike that of r.aroaldino. has practically played itself out in England. Kil- cock, son of KJtwarlin, was a most beautiful horse and an extremely fast one besides, but Kileock was not s1!Ui success. Ogden. however, since his location in Kentucky, has gone ahead in no uncertain manner and in Sir Martin sired one of unite Hie tirst class and for a number of seasons past Ogden has stood high in in the list of winning sires. Anno Domini will not be denied, however, and this season finds Ogden with only one two year-old winner. Wayfarer, to his credit. Ogden. though of Matchem descent, is overwhelmingly Eclipse and boasts only six crosses of Herod in his first thirty-two quarti-rings. Small wonder tie n that he has scored his best successes off mares of Herod descent or mares which show the Herod : train close to the surface. Sir Martins dam. Lady Sterling, is a daughter of Hanover and Catalina II.. grandam of Star Jasmine, is a daughter of Hanovers sire Hindoo. Moreover, it the foot of Star Jasmines pedigree there is to lie found a regular gamut of Herod blood which comes in tiy way of Lexington twice, Vandal itwicpi. Wanderer and Glencoes daughter. Eagles*. Star tai. Star Jasmines dam. is an eleven-year-old chestnut daughter of Star SUixit. The Star Shoot coloring, bowevetf, lias pot been handed on to Mr McDowells mare, the Ogden brown having in this case proven the most potent factor. What a loss to .Mr. McDowell and the turf generally would have been Star Jasmine8 retirement from the turf last year following the accident she sustained at the Lexington meet- hag At Hie time it was thought the mate would be incapacitated from further racing. Happilv no permanent Injury was done and Star Jasmine, I take it. is now better than ever she was in her life and a coa- tinuanee of success will be gratifying to us nil. Solon 2°, W.
