Ladies Day Brings Out a Big Crowd — Commensia First in a Close Finish Between Three — L. Garth Takes His First Race of the Meeting. Ottawa. Out.. August 27.— A card which catered largely to Canadian-owned and foaled horses was offered by the management at Connaught Iark today. Of the seven races that made up the card, three were for Canadian horses, two being at one mile and the Other a -print. The usual daily steeplechase was also decided and the sport was of the wholesome sort throughout he day, despite the fact that several of the winners were returned by Wide margins. The largest crowd of the meeting journeved to the course to witness the running of the card. The fact that it was ladies d.-.y accounted for the presence of a large number of the fair sex as guests of the management. Weather conditions were mncta Improved as c.mipared with preceding days, ii being waim and sunimerlike. The result was that the members lawn and proaaenade wem well pat-roamed. The fifth, a selling race for Canadian-owned horses, resulted in a thrilling finish, in which Com .nensia managed to get up In the closing strides to nose out Water Lily and Privet Petal The winn r was restrained behind the leaders and came Willi a rush at the end. The public had ■ goad line on the merits of the horses engaged, and the majority of the winners were warmly supported. Lewis Garth scored his tirst steeplechase Victory of the meeting when Idle Michael showed a sUia-!i-ing performance and led horne a good baud with Iiog and Cynosure second and third. l-ii,l Fox saddled two of tile afternoons winners in Marion Gaiety and Commensia. Jockey J. Connors, who was injured when he fell from the filly Barka in a race a few davs ago, i» progressing favorably at the Water Street Hospital at Ottawa. Connors fractured hig left forearm. John F. Smyth has chosen the name "Dont Ask Mr" for the yearling Canadian-foaled tillv that ho has at Blue Bonnets. She is the offspring of Toddington — Hurrah. While beinn galloped on the roads that adjoin the track this morning, Irish Heart bolted and ran away for over a mile. The rider sustained a severe shaking up. John W. Burttschcll made the announcement today thai the three-year-old Kopje suffered an attack similar to the one tjial visited Rose Water yesterday. Kopje was bitten on the knee, presumably by a spider, ibe day the stable arrived and was gal- loped today for the tirst time. A rapid swelling with a free discharge of pan were the most promi- sent symptoms. Twenty-two layers were in line today and brisk business was reported throughout. William Walker has decided to remain through the Canadian circuit and will ship from Toronto c participate in the l.au.nia meeting.
