WO. and soon after his arrival rode ; his first winner at the Manchester September meeting of the same year, his winning mount being • Mr. It. MiKreerys Paiutc. which won a selling • plate. An hour later he won the Friday Plate on 1 the same gentlemans Had Xews. Having once made a start, it was not long before Maher had established a big reputation among contemporary riders, and during the past fifteen years jj be has ridden many notable winners. The first t of his numerous classic triumphs was scored on ■ Sir James Millers Aida in the Oaks of 1901. Two o years ialer he won lis first Derby in the colors of tlie same gentleman on I Jock Sand, and subsequently won the St. I.eger ou the son of Sainfoin. • Had he Ml liecii claimed for Sir D. Coopers Flotsam iu the Two Thousand he would have lieen ■ associated with the winning of the triple crown 11 of I.Ml!. As it was Martin had the mouut on Rock ■ Sand in the first of the classics. Maher was on the back of icero when Lord J Uoselx-rys colt won the Derby iu 1905. while he • also steered Spearmint to victory a twelvemonth 1 later, so that he lias thrice won the chief classic. Iu addith n he won the Two Thousand ou Sweeper I II. and Neil Gow. the Oaks on Keystone 11.. and 1 IIk* St. Iegor ou Uayardo. His Important handicap triumphs have also been numerous. He won the City and Suburban on Pharisee, the Jubilee Handicap on Dounetta. the Manchester Cup .ii l.acnelors Button, the ■hw Handicap on Golden Measure, and the Cambridgeshire • n Iulymelus. He lias ridden the winner of the Eclipse Stakes ou no fewer than four occasions, bis successful mounts lieiug Cheers. He headed the winning riders list in . 1mps ami 191::. and was among the leading three .. iu the majority of other years.
